MEETING NOTES – August 26 – September 16, 2009

Due to the fact that your webpage editor has dropped the ball, the notes for the past few weeks are going to be combined. We kind of talk about the same stuff from week to week, so I think this works!

TEAMS:

The August 26, 2009 meeting was brought to us by Steve Hagenbaugh and his team, the Party Train, which began the meeting with a rousing, exclusive to RER, song and cheer.  They also brought us the most entertaining and beautiful program yet.  A group of Tahitian Dancers performed for the club.  What a treat.  Leave it to Steve to meet a woman in line at Costco (while he was buying M & M's) and then find out she dances and talk her into performing for Rotary!

September 9, 2009 was brought to us by the Wheel Cogs and our special guest was District Governor, Earl Kilmer.  What a great guy! We gave him a bushel of tchotchkes from our businesses and he gave us many antidotes about his life and Rotary and many pointers on being an even better club.  Did you know that you can meet your $100 per year Foundation by logging onto the web site and having $8.33 a month taken out of your account?  How easy is that?

September 16, 2009 was brought to us by the Top Ducks.  As would have the Top Duck Team tradition they brought us a "RER Minute" by Bob Meissner, who told us this little tidbit about himself we wouldn't know.  His Emu got out yesterday and was corralled on Churn Creek Road.  Didn't know he was an Emu Rancher!

Charlie Clinkenbeard introduced us to a young woman who, 30 years ago, was an exchange student in Charlie's home.  Isn't the exchange program wonderful?

Marge Beck read a court order addressed to RER and Queen Bev accusing the queen of some awful acts.  Indecent Exposure, outdated and ill fitting cheer garments, being really loud, amongst other things.  Bev was given a gallon jar, which was filled with coins by fellow Rotarians.  Bev will have to count the coins, roll them and bring a cashier's check to the next meeting.  The letter was of course from none other than our very on Judge Dan Flynn.

Speaker for this week was Larry McKinney from SimpsonUniversity which is celebrating 20 years in Redding.  What a welcome addition to our community the university has been!  If you're around on October 17th, visit the school on their Family Fun Day.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Don't miss the District Conference in Tahoe where the "North State Eight" (Redding area clubs) will have a hospitality room!

Plan now to attend a barbecue and tour of the "Museum of Historical Rust" on October 25th.  This is a private home that has turned into a museum and can be visited by invitation only and RER got invited.  The cost is $25 per person (adults - tri tip or chicken), $15 per child (hot dog).  Please contact Steve Hagenbaugh to sign up now.  The club will bill you for the tickets (regardless if you show up or not).

The Enterprise High School Terry Quibell Ticket Booth will be dedicated on October 9th between the JV and Varsity game.  Watch for more details.

If you can help with the scholarship auction please contact Myron Tisdel or Sue Tiffany.

Queen Bev thanked Eric Smith for stepping up and taking photos in Dick Yoder's absence.

Team 7 had a Super Social and was commended for that.  Les Melburg and Shannon Phillips were reprimanded for not having had a team social yet.  No surprise to everyone, the Pub Crawl Kings have now had TWO socials.

Ed Harrison and John Oakes will host a special five course dinner, cooked by John and held at Ed's home.  The catch?  You have to bid on the dinner and all proceeds will go to the Scholarship Fund.

Be sure and check out the story and photos of RER's participation in the Special Olympics Dinner and Dance.

Board Report:  Clarified the policy on complimentary meals.  See Queen Bev for a copy.  As of October 1, 2009 lunches will be $17.  The board is implementing a "should to shoulder" plan that will help members who are experiencing difficult financial times.  See Bev or Charlie Menoher.  Two new members were approved and are travelling through the final process.  The board has agreed to implement a Visioning Process to plan our club vision for the next few years.  RER will again support the Harlan Carter Basketball Tournaments for $1,000.  Two director positions will be open in July. If you are interested, please talk to Bev.  The club will also need a president-elect and secretary next year.

The first Student of the Month was presented to Malcom from EnterpriseHigh School.  He is on student council, link crew, Key Club, has a 3.92 GPA and takes three AP classes.  He may be taking over Rotary soon!  Congrats to Malcom.

Don't forget the Dine & Donate event on September 17th at Logan's, Applebee's and Marie Calendars.  Proceeds go to Ducky Derby.

Myron Tisdel needs one more boat with about five people in it.

Bill Evanhoe needs money counters.

Diane Guhy needs Ducky Information entered in the computer.

RECOGNITIONS:  Susan Tiffany was recognized for the big 6-0 birthday and paid $60. 60.

J. Michael Wells, unemployed motor home mechanic spent three days golfing in Colorado with former RER member, Jeff Martin.  He won a tourney that just about paid for the expenses.  He tried the attendance exempt, past president, rotary shirt method of getting out of his fine, but it didn't work.  He paid $177.80.

Ed Harrison came back from Italy with a bribe of wine for the Queen.  It didn't work either and he paid up.  (Missed that one)!

Virgil Weld said aloha in Hawaii where he stayed with his son.  No hotel fee!   His fine was $62.29.

A trip to Disneyland with the grandkids and watching his granddaughter marry cost Tim Welch $94.03.

Randall Hempling had the wrong spelling on his badge.  Don't think anyone got fined for that.

Avis, who has been visiting us from the Los Gatos club, was considered an honorary member and fined $19.92 for using us!

John Oakes was honored as the "Stud of the Moment" by our Queen.  John participated in the US Senior Olympics at Stanford and placed in four cycling events.  He took a 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 6th place.  He was recognized for $77.37.

When your grandson is mentioned in a speech by the President of the United States, you're gonna have to pony up!  Milt Schultz' grandson, Andoni Schultz, was mentioned in President Obama's speech to school kids.  Andoni had a brain tumor when he was three and has had to battle with the effects since.  He is now in college and doing great.  Check out our web page for the link to the national news story.  Milt paid $50.05 for Andoni's fame.

Gordon Flinn had a 50/50 and we're not talking money.  He celebrated both his wife's and his parent's 50th wedding anniversaries recently.  He also has one son in grad school, another to college and a daughter who just got married.  He wasn't fined for all that though, he had to buy back his sun glasses he left and were found by Queen Bev.  That cost the empty nester $111.11.

When you cruise you lose!  Or at least you lose money to RER.  Frank Lehmann was cruising side-by-side with the Prices and had to pay $63.23 for that vacation. He used the moment to tell us about a recent break-in at his office as well.

Charlie Clinkenbeard fished all day and caught about 40lbs, which cost him $42.00.  His partner in crime, Don Brooks, who also fished all day, said that Charlie actually caught 80lbs. and he paid $52.00 for being the snitch.  He did say that he was the youngest, most handsome and caught the most fish!

Pat Beasley won a scooter from the TurtleBay raffle.  Even though he's excited about the win, it has caused dissention in his home and he knew he had reached a Rotary milestone when the first thing he thought after winning was "I'm going to get fined!"  He paid $150.30.

The name change of Mary Burger's care home to "A Brand New Day" cost her $84.45.

Frank Strazzarino did some major "sucking up" to the Queen by delivering a new crown and scepter right after last week's meeting.  His crown was too small, and Marge Beck presented the queen with an even bigger crown.  Both will probably get lots of team points.

Recent 50/50 participants have been Thales (our exchange student), Bill Wright and Bill Evanhoe.  The pot is now up to $340 + because no one has been the big winner.

DON'T FORGET ---- BIG SURPRISE NEXT WEEK!
