Integrity and Courtesy Shield AwardsThe Rotary Club of Fairview presented two annual awards this week, the Courtesy Shield Award and the Integrity Shield Award. The Courtesy Shield is awarded on the basis of professional, friendly service, the Integrity Shield on the basis of integrity, community service through both the workplace and outside the workplace. This year the Courtesy Shield was presented to Diane Wiebe of Alberta Treasury Branch. The Integrity Shield was presented to Stan Burkholder of the Fairview Hospital Foundation.   |

Rotary Shield Awards 2024This week the Rotary Club of Fairview presented two awards, the Integrity Shield Award and the Courtesy Shield Award, both awarded based on outside nominations of individuals whose life exemplifies the four-way test. The Courtesy Shield is for employees who are professional, helpful, courteous and friendly at all times in their working life. The Integrity Shield is for individuals who exempllfy the ideal of service both in and outside of their work life. The Courtesy Award was presented to Fran Wylie, a long-time employee at Dunvegan Inn and Suites where she works as waitress. The Integrity Shield was presented to Cliff Wagner Jr. of Peace Farm Power

Rotary Integrity Award PresentedEach year, the Rotary Club of Fairview presents the Integrity Award to a non-Rotarian. The person chosen for the award leads a life that shows purpose and expresses principles widely accepted in the community ; their life is consistent with the Rotary 4-Way test: Of the things we think say or do, is it the truth, is it fair to all concerned, will it build good will and better friendship and will it be beneficial to all concerned. The candidate is someone who would take a stand without concern for personal loss or reputation, not necessarily someone it the public eye but does contribute to the region. This year Rotary co-president Chris Laue (left) presented the Integrity Shield to Pastor Dave Brisbin of the Fairview Gospel Chapel (right).

Popcorn for Polio Moonlight Madness in Fairview November 27th saw the Rotary Club of Fairview selling popcorn with proceeds going toward the eradication of Polio in the world. $226 worth of popcorn sold and the club adding $1000 made a significant contribution to Polio Plus, a Rotary International entity working to eliminate this terrible disease. Thank you to Warren's Integra Tire and Fairview Chamber of Commerce for their contributions to this opportunity to make a difference. Supporting Food DriveRotary Club of Fairview was pleased to assist the FHS staff and students with the annual Community Food Drive in support of the Fairview Food Bank. Members assisted in the delivery of reusable bags to each resident in town on Dec 02 and the collection of filled bags on Dec 05. Rotarian Dennis Radbourne, Kristen Duncan (FHS team lead) Rotarians Pauline Broddle and Chris Laue with a cheque presentation to defray costs.

Cheryl is not one to mince words or to try for political correctness, what you see is what you get, and in her case it is a real belief in the importance of using natural organic ingredients when she makes her products. |
Rotary District 5020 Governor ElectROTARYCLUB OF FAIRVIEW is proud of Maureen’s Rotary Journey. The incoming governor of Rotary district 5020, the Rotary area with the most members of any district in the Western hemisphere, is a Fairview girl. The Rotary Club of Fairview has never had one of its members become governor of all the clubs in District 5370, but Maureen Fritz-Roberts, a proud graduate of Fairview High School, is taking on the job for all the Rotary clubs on Vancouver Island and down the west coast of Washington state. “I am in love with the work that Rotary does in the community and around the world,” says Fritz-Roberts, “they are the unsung heroes, reducing poverty, disease and conflict. If it wasn’t for Rotarians, polio would still be maiming and killing thousands every year around the world. Rotarians have worked tirelessly to bring clean water and education to almost every corner of the globe. You only have to look around any community where there is a Rotary club to understand the huge positive impact that this group of volunteers, men and women, young and old, have had.” Maureen did not begin her Rotary career in Fairview. “My husband, Dale, joined the Fairview Rotary club when he was 23 and the editor of the Fairview Post. Back in those days, Rotary had not yet realized that they were missing half of the population of energetic and dedicated volunteers as potential members. Rotary did not start admitting women as members in Canada until about the time that we moved our family to Comox on Vancouver Island. We always participated in Rotary as a family. I was involved with the Rotary youth exchange program in Fairview and continued to do that after moving to BC.” “In 2002 I was fortunate to be invited to join the Rotary Club of Comox. They put me to work right away, making me responsible for membership. I thought the best way to bring in new members was to invite a whole group at once. In one meeting we inducted 7 new members. This got the attention of the District Governor at the time and the next thing you knew, I was in charge of membership for all of district 5020. During my time in that position, we became one of the largest districts in the world by membership.” “One of the highlights of that time in Rotary was acting as the registrar for one of seven conferences in the world organized by the president of Rotary International, coincidentally a Canadian, that year.” “After my term as membership chair for the district, I finally got the chance to be president of my own club. I also had the opportunity to travel to Ethiopia and other parts of Africa three times to immunize children against polio, help with water projects and to initiate a micro-credit program to help women create their own financial success.” “Now I get to help the 90 Rotary clubs in my district to succeed in helping others, both at home and around the world. Thanks again to Dunvegan Gardens Fairview for the flower donations and Town of Fairview for continuing to water. Clock and message board refurbishment plans are well on the way however no firm dates in place. We know our community misses it greatly |

Exchange Student says Farewell and ThanksExchange Student Claudio DiPalma from Sassari Italy presented his year in review as he prepares to leave Canada. With heartfelt thanks directed to counsellor, host families and other families he had become attached to and the Club members as a whole he went over highlights of his life in and around Fairview. A program filled with laughter and serious thoughts and reflections was well received by those in attendance.
