What it is
The Edmonton Centennial Interact Club’s annual banquet and silent auction fundraiser in support of literacy in Belize. This year’s theme is “Belize in Bloom.”
Who we are
A student-run, Junior Rotary Club at Ross Sheppard High School that organizes service projects both locally and globally, while providing opportunities for our members to grow as leaders in their school and community.
What we do
Locally
- After-school reading program at Coronation Elementary
- Volunteering at Kids’ Kottage in Edmonton
- Volunteering at a local daycare
- Sponsoring a YouthAct Club at Westminster Junior High School
- Participating in Halloween for Hunger: raised 1508kg of food for the food bank
- Volunteering at the Edmonton Heritage Festival
- Volunteering at the Ronald McDonald House
Globally - Our international project aims to improve the education system of Belize, an impoverished nation in Central America. Over the past five years we have raised thousands of dollars in support of two schools, Ocean Academy (http://www.cayecaulkerschool.com) and Eden Primary. Some of our projects have included:
- Full funding of a classroom at Eden Primary, including construction and supplies
- Full funding of a computer lab at Ocean Academy
- Recent purchase of a classroom set of desks for Eden Primary
- Funding of school supplies, textbooks, infrastructure, student scholarships and more
10 of our members will be travelling to Belize over the Spring Break of 2014 where they will visit these schools and assist with projects such as painting, and building as well as a mangrove restoration. Photographs, video and stories from this trip will be shared during the evening of the event.
