Ronald McDonald House® Northern Alberta keeps families together during one of life's most stressful times... the illness or injury of a child.

There is a strong move for Alberta Health Services to encourage “Centers of Excellence”  to care for children which means that many of these “centers” are in major cities.  However, a reality check reminds us that 76% of our population live outside a city with a children’s hospital.  What then?

Many families are on their last tank of gas when they arrive at Ronald McDonald House because they have dropped everything to support their child.  There is a huge emotional and financial burden placed on these families during a time when they should focus on getting better and sharing quality time together.  Ronald McDonald House provides an opportunity for families to stay together as well as they offer much more …

        *a donation of $12 per night per room is asked; however, if there are financial difficulties, the family is cared for regardless of payment [actual cost to run is $210 per night per room];

-       *32 suites for a maximum of 150 people [an additional 42 rooms are needed if the population does not change];

-       *a 93% occupancy rate!

-       *employ a teacher and provide a classroom for children to continue with their studies;

-       *Family Life / Recreation Program offered;

-       *meals provided;

-       *quilt room [since 1985, each sick child will receive a hand made quilt as a gift];

-       *and much more.

Despite the name, only 10% of their yearly operating budget actually comes from McDonalds.  Other corporate donors and private community members support their ongoing initiatives.  Studies have indicated that families who stay at the Ronald McDonald House have a decreased length of stay in hospital for premature infants by an average of 5.3 days.  Government and hospitals are able to save $2,000 to $2,700 a day from early discharge.

Ronald McDonald House provides a safe and affordable alternative to keep families together.  Key to the success of the organization is keeping the “community” and “family” intact during a difficult time.  Inspiration, exploration and education are cornerstones and building blocks for Ronald McDonald House.

Special thanks to Martin Dugas, Executive Director, for sharing the many touching stories of children and families they support, especially “ice cream from a truck”.
