Carin and Stephan Van Vuuren, from the RC Edmonton Strathcona, have been organizing tours to their native southern Africa (Namibia and Botswana) for 15 years. While in Namibia, they have come to know and support Mondesa Youth Opportunities (MYO), a flagship project of the RC of Swakopmund, Namibia.
MYO is an intensive after-school education program located in the Mondesa Township in Swakopmund, Namibia, serving disadvantaged learners who demonstrate potential but lack access to quality education and family support. Operating for nearly 20 years, MYO has provided over 120 students in Grades 4 through 8 with additional education in English, Mathematics, Life Skills, Computers, Sports, and Music.
Several Riverview Rotarians have joined Carin and Stephan on their tours. Riverview is pleased to be financially supporting the MYO this year. Great work Carin and Stephan!
Beyond academics, MYO instills positive thinking and self-esteem, preparing students to become forward-thinking leaders in their community and beyond. This non-profit organization
relies entirely on donations to offer its programs at no cost to its learners.
