Dr. Anne Fanning shared her passion for a unique organization that meets weekly for the pleasure of "making music". This is a special program since they particularly welcome people with dementia. Dementia is a significant cause of disability and dependency in the elderly. Treatment is limited, but there is evidence that physical and social activity can improve cognitive reserve. Most exciting is evidence that "musical memories" can be evoked even when short term memory has been lost. The organization "Music Mends Minds Society" brings individuals with dementia together to sing, play instruments and make music.
The society opened with 8 weekly sessions in 2023. Sessions resume March 5, 2024 for 16 weekly sessions on Tuesday mornings, 10:45 - 12:15 at St. Georges Anglican Church (11733-87 Ave). If interested, please contact Anne Fanning (cell 780-966-9861 or anne.fanning@ualberta.ca) for more details.
