Background:

Ms. Chido Shoniwa was born in Zimbabwe and left her home country for the first time when she came to Canada on a Rotary Scholarship to study to become a Rehabilitation Practitioner in the field of deafness, becoming well skilled in the work involved in audiological testing, ear mold making and fitting. She was also a trained and skilled teacher of the deaf and hard of hearing and had worked with children in classrooms for a number of years. When she came to study at Grant MacEwan College, she actually took a two year course in just one and a half years – she was a brilliant and dedicated student here and made many friends. When she returned to Zimbabwe, she continued to work with deaf children and traveled the country as much as possible so that children could have hearing aids. She worked for the Ministry of Education in Zimbabwe and was much loved and respected for her dedication and her wonderful way with children and families. She met with a member of the Rotary Club of Edmonton Riverview just a few months before her death and was asking if there was a possibility of getting another scholarship so that she could go further with her education and obtain a University Degree in Audiology. She understood that this increase in her own skills and knowledge was severely needed in Zimbabwe.

She loved her country and her family there; sadly, death surrounded her during her time in Canada, as she lost three close family members during that brief time. Her own untimely death was a shock for all of us who knew her, as she suddenly developed an infection for which the hospitals had no antibiotics. In spite of hardship, she always had an outlook on life which gave her strength and courage, and she never lost her sense of humour. I think that as a student we were all impressed with her ability to forge ahead in a strange land, to make the most of every moment and to excel in her studies. This Chido Shoniwa scholarship is a tribute to a dedicated and truly inspirational woman.
