Mayfield Rotary Club Meeting August 3, 2016

In attendance: Grant D, Lorne, John, Derek, Linda, Harvey, Jim L, Zaheer, Frank, Brian, Nada, Ursula, Terry.

Guests. Devon and Lynn from the Alberta Community Living partnership.

Meeting called to order at 12:05 by President Brian.

O’Canada led by Grant. Blessing offered by Frank. Very, very, ordinary rendition

Meeting reconvened at 12:22.

Devon and Lynn presented a brief overview of the ACL /Rotary partnership. Presently over 400 ACL members employed. Recent contact with the Edmonton Rotary Club provided tow more strong leads.  Foster Parks Brother of St Albert has joined the program.

President called for member reports. None offered. John advised there are no birthday or anniversary celebrations this week.

For a second week in a row, terry drew the lucky 50/50 number and received $5 for his buy in of $5.

Jim Logan with great relish and flair was called to introduce our guest speaker Flo Stomp. Gold star for Jim – he followed the script to a tee.

Background – worked as a clinician in active rehabilitation for many years

  • Created a unique practice aimed at spine injury (although not exclusively) 
  • Uses water therapy as an anti-gravity medium to reduce exercise stress
  • Anti-gravity of water allows reduced pain resulting in more movement
  • Program is designed to meet individual pathologies
  • In her practice became aware of huge voids in treating chronic pain.
  • This provided motivation to undertake her PHD on pain treatment
  • Provided several antidotal examples of how innovative treatment works
  • Suggested the medical fraternity be provided with more pain control education while in training ( veterinarians receive 200 hours vs 20 for docs)
  • Estimated cost of pain treatment/ lost productivity in Canada 56- 60 billion $ annually.
  • Touched on benefits of marijuana as a positive pain treatment.
  • Requested financial support so she might attend International Assoc. for Study of pain in Japan this fall?

Linda thanked Flo for her presentation with the usual contribution to PP in her name.

Harvey was on his game today. 3 very entertaining snippets.
