Our meeting on June 19th was much better attended than last week.
The meeting started very well when it was held in the “Top of the inn” room for the first time in a long time and the breakfast was a quiche. Unfortunately the Hotel kind of ruined the moment when it did not have enough meals for everyone and our guests (scholarship winner Miji Kim and her mother) had to wait until everyone else had finished their meal before they got their meals!
We had the pleasure of meeting the recipient of one of our 2019 scholarships, Miji Kim. Miji is graduating from Harry Ainlee high school this week. She will be travelling to South Korea for the summer and then moving to Montreal where she is enrolled as a first year student at McGill. She has plans to become a doctor and volunteer with Doctors without borders.
Our feature speaker was Murray McCann. Murray talked about the “Homes for Heroes foundation that he founded. He stated his belief that
“if we are prepared to send youth to risk their lives for our country we must be prepared to support them when they return home”
Murray learned that too often the homeless person that you see on the street was once a proud soldier. Our veterans often have trouble transitioning back to civilian life and end up on the streets. His foundation is constructing transition villages to provide housing for homeless veterans wto help them transition back to civilian life. The villages consist of 20 tiny houses. Shannon Troke’s changeover party was held on Saturday the 15th. I am told that it was a great party but past president David Keam could not attend because he was at the emergency department having his hand treated. His dog bit him!
