Jamie Pallett announced that our own, humble, Lorne Parker has been awarded the Governer General Award for his work in Mozambique. Congratulations Lorne. We are all very proud of you. I can not think of anyone who deserves it more.
President Keam announced that the Club has sold it’s first corporate membership. The membership allows a corporate member to be represented by two employees.
The meeting was run by Team 3. David Dorcus conducted a trivia contest for fines. Did you know;
McDonalds is the worlds largest distributor of toys; and;
Lego is the largest distributor of tires and;
implemented a new schedule for the Club. This week we had a speaker. Next week will be fellowship meeting. We will not have a speaker.
President Keam reminded the Club that our November 21 meeting will be an evening meeting at the Faculty Club. Anne McLelland will be our speaker. Please bring a guest. This will be an opportunity to introduce potential new members to the Club.
Out club sponsored Andrea to travel to France as our exchange student 12 years ago. She came back to our Club to tell us what she has done since she left for France.
Andrea talked about her experiences in France and the lasting friendships she made during her year there. Since she returned she has graduated from U of A with a degree in nursing, earned a Masters Degree in Public Health and works as a nurse with Capital health. In addition, she has recently joined with the Doctors Without borders Organisation. She talked about the goals and objectives of Doctors Without Borders and some of the missions that she has been on.
It was very interesting presentations and Andrea is a very impressive woman. Our Club is very proud of any small part we may have played by sponsoring her exchange visit.
We have secured the entire Varscona Theatre for a performance of 'The Comedy Company" on November 7 (a Wednesday) - see below for the outline and the details - it is a story about the PPCLI in WW1.
At the performance, we are planning to have extensive information available about our club, our projects (Mozambique), and Rotary in general.
We are going to invite the military community to attend through the Military Family Resource Centre - a cross-section of our community that we have not really tapped into for new members.
We are going to encourage Gateway members to bring guests that they think might make a good Rotarian.
Deb Jack has a friend in Calgary who is the creator of the memory project in Calgary with the crosses on Memorial Drive (Deb has more details on this. He is being honored by the PPCLI with a 21 gun salute for his efforts this year as he is named Citizen of the Year.
Deb has asked him to come and speak to our club at our meeting on November 7 in the morning, then a shortened version at the start of the play - where Dave Keam will also speak about Gateway and what Rotary does in the world - to encourage the guests to learn about Rotary during the intermission and chat to a member.
We know you usually get a speaker for the Remembrance Day meeting but are hopeful this will work just as well as November 7 is our meeting closes to Remembrance Day.
