Overheard at Breakfast on January 8 2020 We had a pretty good turnout on a snowy morning for the first meeting of the year. Elizabeth reminded everyone of the Potluck for Polio event at River Valley Place on the evening of January 17, 2020. There has been a fairly tepid response to her rsvp. As usual, our members wait until the last minute to commit. Elizabeth will send a reminder out again this week. Please respond as son as you receive it. Also coming up next month On the 22nd we will be at McKay school On the 29th we will be at the Center for Autism Pat Coyle was our fines master this week. He presented a world affairs quiz and our members did surprisingly well. Our speaker this week was Melanie Hibbard. Melanie is an ex banker (she used to work with our own Peter Elder), the mother of two children with children who have type 1 diabetes, a Rotarian and Executive director for Drifcan Diabetes Research Institute Foundation Canada. https://drifcan.com/Melanie gave a very informative and moving presentation. She talked about; - The challenges that children with Type 1 diabetes (and their parents) face including;
- Monitoring all food they eat
- Frequent needles or wearing an insulin pump;
- Worries about sugar lows and potentially fatal consequences;
- The research by Dr. Shapiro at the U of A that the DrifCAN foundation funds and;
- The life changing effects that it has had
Thank You to Melanie for a great presentation. It was truly an inspiring way to start our Rotary Year. |
