Our speaker this week was our own Ken Saunders. Ken has been a Rotarian since the 1960s so it was time for him to give another classification presentation and he gave us a very interesting and engaging classification talk. Ken talked about being born in and growing up in a tough district in Winnipeg. He talked about being a wartime child whose parents were both involved in the WWII war effort. His dad was in th army and his mom worked in a munitions factory. He talked about the fear of polio that was rampant when he was a child and his memories of fishing and hunting with his Dad. Ken started his working life with the Hudsons bay company. He talked about the different outposts that he was posted to and his experiences running the company stores, buying furs and how he met and married his wife, Iris. Although we all think of Ken as a fur trader it turns out that he left the Hudsons Bay company and went into the real estate business in the 1970s. Ken distributed copies of old employment contracts with the Hudson Bay company, newspaper articles and innuit art. Thanks for sharing Ken. It was very interesting. |
