In the February issue of Rotary, an article written on a story from Sam Okudzeto, is featured on page 30.  Sam was a member of the African Regional Polio Plus Committee from Ghana.  He was flying to Sierra Leone for an annual meeting of the group.  However, when the plane arrived he saw soldiers flooding the tarmac.  As they walked to passport control and airport official advised him that there had been a coup in the AM and gunshots could be heard in the distance.  The plan that brought them left.  There were no taxis running.  The Polio Plus group walked to the town’s hotel, put down their luggage and went to a restaurant.  Sam recalls ordering the largest sole fish he’d ever eaten as he thought that might be his last meal.  Fortunately, a few days later they were able to fly out in a helicopter.  He cites this experience as an analogy about fear.  “There is an enemy in life – and it’s fear.  For those who are not afraid, it’s amazing what you can do.  It’s fantastic to see the result now:   Africa is [wild] polio-free.”  He goes on to report on the individuals and groups in Africa who were able, in spite of fear, to work to eradicate polio there.
