We were lucky enough to have a visiting Rotarian at lunch with us again today. Harold Frye is from the Overland Park Club and took his role seriously last year as the Sgt-at-Arms. He made the commitment to explore other Rotary clubs in the District. We are the 21st club he has visited and he's willing to come again since we are such a friendly group.

Nancy BoyerCoordinator for the Peoria Street Learning Center (PSLC), joined us today to share all of the changes and innovative ideas that are shaping them this year. In 18 years, Nancy has seen a variety of changes, and these are the highlights from her presentation today:
  • Peoria Street started as an Alternative High School in 1995 through Greenbush
  • It was originally located in the first Louisburg High School (what is now The Plaza), hence the name "Peoria Street"
  • After moving through several different locations, it is back on Peoria Street, on The Plaza, Suite 117
  • In 2000 it became a Charter School with its first graduating class
  • Since then more than 140 students have graduated from PSLC
  • In 2005 it became a Community Learning Center
  • There is an average of 40 active students throughout the year
  • As many as 60 have been enrolled before "life gets in the way"
  • The oldest graduate was 62
  • The oldest student was 72
  • Most students are 16-30
  • There is now one coordinator in the state for all of Alternative Education
  • Coordinators (The Nancy Boyers of the World) run the centers, which are more localized
  • This is Nancy's first year in 18 years without a teacher on-site with her. She now has a teaching assistant.
  • The curriculum was once E20-20 and is now Edunuity, an inclusive program that is 95% online.
  • There will be less face time with teachers and more opportunity to work electronically, even remotely.
  • PSLC now has a Facebook page which has been an outstanding marketing and communication tool.
  • Students wrote their own slogan: "Education is a Choice - We Choose to Learn"
  • Next school year will include a new integrated learning platform called MYTRAX from Lumen.
  • It is an interest-based program to help students manage their pathway to college and a career.
  • Students have ownership in choosing their future path and assistance in figuring out how to get pointed in the right direction.
Everyone is welcome to attend the PSLC graduation ceremony on Saturday, May 17 @ 11am @ Louisburg Middle School.
