Tonight, we heard about the importance of the arts from Therese Hamilton, executive director of the Salisbury Wicomico Arts Council (SWAC), a 58-year old non-profit organization that promotes visual, audio, and culinary arts.
When it was founded in 1967, SWAC was the first arts council in Maryland and its creation led to similar groups in all other counties and at the state level. Its mission is to enchance the quality of life in our community by fostering arts awareness and education and by advocating for funding to support and promote a rich diversity of artists and artistic experiences for all.
Therese spent most of her time at tonight's meeting talking about the many programs aimed at youngsters in Wicomico County. This is done through on-hands learning projects, concerts, scholarships, and much more. Details can be found at www.getswac.org. She concluded by noting that each dollar spent on the arts generates four dollars in economic activity.
