While many national and regional department stores are shrinking or disappearing altogether, the 51-store Boscov’s chain is growing and Salisbury Boscov’s store manager Marty Remme explained why tonight to club members.

Speaking at our regular weekly meeting, Mr. Remme, with 40 years of retail sales experience, including the last year and half at the Salisbury Boscov’s store, said Boscov’s is the largest family owned department store chain in America.

Founded in 1911 and headquartered in Reading, Pennsylvania, Mr. Remme said Boscov’s is thriving because it offers a place where people want to work, where service is provided to customers, has products consumers want, and involves itself in the community.

He said the store has no plans to leave, a question he often is asked.  In just one week in the recent Christmas shopping period, 42,000 people visited the Salisbury store.  Despite the popularity of computer shopping, Mr. Remme said people still like to shop in a department store where they can touch, try-on, and feel products they are buying.  He concluded his comments by saying the future is bright for Boscov’s.
