The large display of American flags at Wor-Wic Community College is gone, but the good the hundreds of flags achieved continues. 2025 was the tenth year of the Wicomico County Flags for Heroes program and at a new location this year.
Thanks to the joint efforts of the Rotary Club of Salisbury, the Rotary Club of Wicomico County, and the Salisbury Sunrise Rotary Club, thousands of dollars were raised to support local military veteran assistance groups. The clubs appreciate the first-year participation of Wor-Wic Community College that serves veterans and active-duty military members from all branches of service throughout the year, with approximately 300 veteran and military students attending annually.
Receiving Rotary-raised money to help with their veterans’ assistance programs are:
- Operation We Care that provides care packages for armed forces members who are serving overseas.
- U.S. Kennels, Inc. assists veterans battling Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, brain damage, and other combat related disabilities by adopting rescue dogs and training them to become service animals.
- Heroes Haven, Inc. transports injured veterans, police officers, emergency medical service personnel, and fire fighters to the Eastern Shore of Maryland for a hunting experience and Eastern Shore hospitality.
- The DAV Eastern Shore Chapter 34 mission is “Building Better Lives for America’s Disabled Veterans and Their Families”. A key activity for this group is transporting veterans to their medical appointments - including to the Perry Point VA medical center in Cecil County,
Dr. Deborah Casey, President of Wor-Wic Community College, Jason King, Director of the Veteran Services Department, along with a few of his students, Wor-Wic staff members, and representatives of the veterans groups came out to celebrate the success of this military veterans’ assistance Rotary project.
