Dr. Steve Leonard, CEO of the TidalHealth hospital system, gave a very informative update on the ever-expanding network of hospitals, medical offices, educational programs, and other services of our regional health care giant.
TidalHealth, with hospitals in Salisbury, Crisfield and Berlin, Maryland and one in Seaford, Delaware, serves a population of 593,000 persons in our three-state region. With 6,500 employees and $1.4 billion in annual revenue, TidalHealth has been acquiring hospitals and medical offices while expanding its primary campus in Salisbury and elsewhere.
The latest construction projects are a 40-bed patient observation unit adjacent to the Salisbury emergency room that will help relieve emergency room waiting times. Additionally, work is underway to complete a no-bed medical center in lower Sussex County, Delaware.
A fairly new initiative is a new physicians training program. Now serving 146 soon-to-be fully accredited medical doctors, this education program has dozens of speciality areas of medicine that should help increase the number of locally based physicians. The hope is that by training here that the new physicians will remain here.
TidalHealth also is a partner with Salisbury University in trying to have the university's College of Health and Human Services moved to the hospital campus from the university campus. A lot of work remains for this to be accomplished but Dr. Leonard was optimistic about its likely success.
