Fishing in the Park
Past President Ruth Ashford and Treasurer Marianne Ezell get those hot dogs into buns and wrapped - ready for self service.
The trouts won the day - that's why it's called fishing and not catching.
Rotary SJE/E's annual pairing of 3rd graders from Dorsa School with Interactors from Eastside High Schools for a morning of fishing & fellowship. A big thank you was shouted to Rotarians, Charlie Wasser, Nick Leon, Sara & Greg Calkins, Ruth Ashford and Marianne Ezell as happy students departed after lunch.
Interactors (Rotary for high schoolers) paired with 3rd graders - bonds quickly formed. The weather began overcast but improved to a glorious spring day!
Having met the bus at 8am, fisher-students were very much ready for hot dogs at 11am. Thanks, Honorary Rotarian Greg Calkins, for manning the grill.
Club Dir. of Youth Services, Nick Leon, helped students with lines. "Service Above Self sure is fun when you're hanging around with Rotarians, Interactors and the third graders of Dorsa School." says Nick.
Club Speaker
Eleanor Vogelsang of CLOSE UP - Washington DC Education Programs gave a great presentation on the organizations' mission to "inform, inspire, and empower youth to be actively engaged citizens in our democracy." Given the statistics she quoted as to how poorly informed youth (and yes, adults) are about how our government works, their program is all the more timely and significant.

We successfully kickstarted the India Club under Rotary International with the able guidance of Charlie Wasser tonight! Indians in the community and patrons of India are most welcome to join us in the next meeting on March 29th @ 7 pm in ICC, Milpitas. Projects that impact India, our role in the mainstream society here in the Bay Area, the impact of Media in our community, especially in the light of the upcoming elections - will be talked about! Hope to see you there!!
