June 21, 2016 (week 51)

President Twana Karney rang the bell and called the meeting to order with the Mountain View Rotary mantra, “We’re More Than A Club…We’re a Family!!!”  She reminded us that our International call to action for 2015-2016 is to “Be a Gift to the World” and our club’s call to action this year is “Being the Best We Can Be.”

Ernie Hawks led us to a Pledge of Allegiance to our flag.

Bruce Barsi shared some quotes of inspiration from some of our country’s founders.

Songmaster Phil Armi led us in a most enthusiastic version of the “Marine Corps Song.”

Ernie’s son Eric Hawks joined us at our meeting today.

SPEAKER:

Dave Cole introduced our speaker Carl Honaker, talking to us about the future of Moffett Field.

Carl reviewed the transition we have seen at Moffett Field since it was established in the 1930’s.  It began as the base for the dirigible, USS Macon.  After that, it housed army aircraft and then served as a base for the coastal patrol blimps during WWII.  Following the war, the base was used for military transport aircraft and it became the West Coast Fighter Town.  That was followed by the P3 Orion era which patrolled the West Coast to maintain national security.  And eventually, the base was turned over to NASA.

The new era for Moffett Field started with the base transition in 1994.  In 1997, a master plan was developed to make the base into a research park with an academia element.  Unfortunately, they were unable to attract partners to participate in this endeavor.  The base floundered a bit for a few years after that with no solid direction.  In 2013, the federal government decided to partner with a civilian entity and put out a bid to manage the majority of the base and make necessary renovations.  Google won the bid and has a 60 year lease with another 36 years of potential extensions.  They have already started working on some of the buildings.  The three major projects are reskinning Hanger One, renovating the other two hangers, and making improvements to the golf course.

For those who would like to get on the base to play golf, eat at the restaurant, or visit the museum, you just need to present government issued identification like a drivers license at the gate.

Our next meeting is on Tuesday, July 12th.  Our Speaker will be Martha Kendall and her presentation is entitled “DOO Dah, The Life and Music of Stephen Foster.”  Our 4-Fer for the meeting on July 12th is Tori Atwell.

Remember to Be a Gift to Your Club, Be a Gift to the World!
