Mountain View Rotary Club Meeting

Minutes of January 26, 2016 – notes by Dick

The meeting got off to its start with President Twana Karney calling on all of us to the Rotary International Theme for 2015-2016:

                                                            BE A GIFT TO THE WORLD!

Paul Reinhart led us in the pledge to the Flag and Twana filled in for John Akkaya in reading his thoughts for the day. Phil Armi “Our Song Master Supreme” led us in “Somewhere over the Rainbow” with his respects to Judy

Garland.

Visiting Rotarians today were: Narendra Rao from Mumbai and our “Los Altos member in Residence”: Dennis Potter.

Guests today were: Subraya Mallya, guest of Narendra Rao;

George Carpenter, guest of Dick Lubman;

Helen Meeks was visiting us again today.

Evonne Morantes; (Communications Director) was a guest of our speaker.

Brenda Taussig: (Government and Community Relations) El Camino Hospital

President Twana had a drawing for the President’s Club Members for her home produced KARNEY BEE HONEYAlan Goodman was the lucky person to have his name drawn.

ROTACARE CHANGESBarbara Avery, Director of Community Benefits, from El Camino Hospital gave a short presentation on the changing demographics that are impacting the patient base at the RotaCare Clinics here and around the Bay.  The Affordable Care Act has given more people access to their own doctors and also the cost of living has forced people to leave the area.  She and El Camino Hospital are very appreciative of all the efforts that members of our club have done over many years in supporting the RotaCare Clinic.

Patients are being directed to a more comprehensive clinic located in Mountain View in the AAA Building: The MayView Community Health Center.  For more information Google: mayview.org.  Barbara stated that there is still a need for volunteers at this facility.

Today’s Program:  23 and Me

Ken Schwaderer introduced today’s speaker, Catherine Afrarian, Director of Public Relations at 23 and Me

The company’s name comes from the fact that there are 23 human chromosomes.  The Human Genome Project was completed in 2003.

The sequencing of the human genome holds benefits for many fields, from molecular medicine to human evolution. The Human Genome Project, through its sequencing of DNA, can help us understand diseases including: genotyping of specific viruses to direct appropriate treatment; identification of mutations linked to different forms of cancer; the design of medication and more accurate prediction of their effects and other benefits.

The National Institute of Health was the largest funder of this research.

Understanding your own genetic information can help you to make better health decisions.

23 and Me offers:

Carrier Status reports to find out if you are the carrier of an inherited condition.

Ancestry Reports which can tell you about your family history.

Wellness Reports that can help you make more informed decisions about your diet and exercise.

Traits Reports which explore what makes you unique from food preferences to physical features.

Thank you, Catherine, for a very interesting and informative presentation.

NEXT WEEK’S PROGRAM, FEBRUARY 2:  HOPE’S CORNER

Leslie Carmichael will be telling us about the great work her organization is doing in Mountain View to help feed those in need.

See you next week.  Dick
