Brian Coulter became passionate about working on Parkinson’s related issues when his best friend was diagnosed with the disease in his early 40’s.  Brian’s father has also been diagnosed with Parkinson’s.  Brian joined the Board of Directors for the Parkinson’s Institute and Clinical Center (PICC) and was appointed as CEO in 2019.  PICC has recently moved from Sunnyvale to a new campus near El Camino Hospital in Mountain View.

There are one million people in the United States who have Parkinson’s and more than ten million people worldwide.  Between one and two percent of people over fifty have Parkinson’s.  The exact cause is unknown, but genetic and environmental issues are believed to be factors.  Four common symptoms include tremors, slowness, stiffness, and imbalance.

The best treatment for Parkinson’s falls into three categories:  1) Good medical care; 2) Exercise to slow progression of the disease and improve motor symptoms; 3) Support groups.  PICC focuses on care, research and education.  In 2020, they will be working on gut brain connection, genetics database, and biomarkers.

Future Schedule:
Next 4fer is Phil Armi

Thanks to our guests for joining us today!

Have a great week!

And remember…“ Rotary Connects the World, and We Connect Our Community”
