President’s Greeting:  

Good afternoon!   I’d like to welcome you to the Rotary Club of Mtn. My name is Scott Johnson, your President for 2017-2018

Our Rotary International theme for this year is “Rotary: Making a Difference.”   Our Mountain View Rotary Club theme is “Mountain View Rotary: Having Fun Making a Difference.”

Club Announcements:
  • Thanks to Jim for being the “4’fer” today! (greeter, thought, dessert & meeting notes)
  • “An American In Paris” Theater Social, October 7th – update – Jim (38 Rotarian’s going. Still need checks from Sanjay David, Heather Stenshamn and Walt Joyce- Please mail to Jim at 799 Castro St., Mountain View, CA 94041. Information about dinner groups, car pooling and tickets will be provided in about three weeks)
  • Mtn View Art & Wine Festival – volunteers for Sunday, Sep. 10th.  -  Twana (Opportunity to have a “ROTARY” booth, please sign up, need 6 volunteers for Sunday)
  • Reminder to the Board:  there is no Board Meeting in August.  
  • Villa Siena Social on Tuesday, August 29th …. This is where our Month end “Social” will be
  • President’s Club:   Recognition of new members receiving the Millions Dollar Bill from Rotary (Tom Meyers and Hiro Kariya).   Thanks to all!  
  • We are presently up to 12 members for a total of $1,800.
 
 
 
Personal Sharing/Announcements:
  • People taking special trips to see the eclipse next week- Twana heading to Boise, ID, Bert to the Tetons National Park, Tom Meyers to Portland (and Salem to catch the first “Eclipse delayed baseball game), Judy to Nashville, TN and Hal to Bend, OR with his son’s.
 
Other Announcements:
  • District Membership Seminar planned for Saturday, August 19th, 9 a.m. to noon, at Castlewood Country Club in Pleasanton.  Flyer available.  
  • “Save the Date” for the District 5170 Rotary Avenues of Service meeting, Thursday, Oct 5th, 5-9 p.m., Santa Clara Biltmore Hotel, Santa Clara.  Flyer available.  
 
Speaker:   Elaine Lung - Improv to Improve Communication - Introduction by Twana
A Certified World Class Speaking Coach and Distinguished Toastmaster. She is a founder of the first Bay Area Toastmasters club that specializes in applied improv skills. 
 
 
Consultant and Coach on Improving Communication or “How to Speak on your feet.  Speak up under pressure”.  Elaine Lung spoke about and coaches people on applying improv skills to speaking, leadership and team building. She uses techniques commonly uses by Improv performers.  Showed us tools that we can all use.  We had 4 exercises using the “Yes, And…” (always agree and add something to the conversation), how to avoid using the blocking phrase “Yes, but….”  And then how to LISTEN to a speaker all the way through to the last word….. , pause and THINK of the whole thing the other person is trying to relay and finally how to act as “A team, making the OTHER person look good.    These are being taught and used by Google and various Business Schools and presentation was very informative and thought provoking.
