Attendance is very important! Think about it-our mission 2009, bring one extra member. We are down to 15 strong members, bring in one member before June 30th of 2009. Look for quality members and people who understand the mission of Rotary.

International update: Voted at the board meeting to participate in the Rotary wheelchair foundation, and clean water, a district grant to pay for the scoreboard.

November is foundation month- last week we talked about annual giving every Rotarian every year.
Today's theme: it does not matter how much, it just has to be consistent.
Goal is to make this fund 1 billion dollars by 2025, 600 million dollars as of now.
Benefactor-plan 1,000 and you get wings signifying you as a benefactor,
Bigness society 10,000 with your estate planning,
Two ways to give:
1. Annual fund
2.) Permanent fund
Extend our service to the world and the community.
Guest Speaker: Anna Boyd Bucy
Associate director of Big Brothers/Big Sisters of San Luis Obispo County
Been in position for 3 years.
Agency: over 300 kids last year were served.
Mentors play a big role in a life. Simple process to take energy and investing it.
Big Brothers Big Sisters have been around for 104 years.
In 1948, a national office was established, 1977 Big Brothers and Big Sisters joined forces and established guidelines for clubs around the nation.
3 basic programs: youth and exploration program allows them to take kids from community school ages 15-19 who are not college bound. 6 job ready classes to help them with skills. Also, job shadowing provides on the job training.
School based program to use high school students to mentor elementary school students. Helps with behavior, they feel better about themselves.
Community based program is the most popular. A mentor in the community 6-8 hours a month. Adults in the community.
Steps involved to become a mentor. Children Referred by a school counselor or word of mouth. Interviews the family to get ideas on interests. Recruit volunteers by publishing in the Tribune or the radio.
The volunteers are phone screened, interviewed and what kind of child they will work best with. The child is placed in a match meeting, and check in every couple weeks and help problem solve.
Result oriented-a survey sent out a year after they are matched, want to make sure the relationship is effective. Competence and caring are the tools of measurement.
Self confidence is built up which leads to better grades.
It takes $1,000 to make a match and supervise the match for a year. This entails the entire process.
One of the ways Rotary can get involved:
Bowling for Kids Sake-get a team together and support the program.

School based program is one hour a week
Community based is one on one, they do things in the community.

Brad Announcement: Vets Hall Thanksgiving Dinner, 4-7 tonight. You can take home a to-go box to a neighbor who can not get out. In this time of giving, think of another!
Visiting Rotarian Ben: Thank you for joining us from your Wednesday club in San Luis Obispo. Ben's club meets at noon at the Madonna Inn and consists of 85 members. Their club also youth based.
