- July is Literacy Month and our club has done a lot with the dictionary program and essay contest. New contest again when the new school year starts.
- Upcoming events: Matching grants seminar in Santa Maria. July 16th at 5:00 for the Chamber mixer. - International Service update: fabulous turn out and wanting to participate with other clubs for matching grants. ï‚·
- Dan is proud to announce the date for the annual fundraiser May 8th 2010 venue is the Vet's Hall. Need to sell 22 tickets. Next meeting is July 28th at 8:30 in the morning to vote and choose a theme. Meet at Liz Weeth's house to get your ideas heard. Opole winery has offered to donate items. ï‚· Want to work up another date for a social. Hilary wants to take advantage of the beach for an old-fashioned cookout. Set up a date and time and we'll do it. August is the month: think about the date so we can confirm. ï‚·
- Guest Speaker: Michelle Caretto-Los Osos Rotary-NID/Polio  Past president of the Los Osos Club and one of the things she added to the pressures of her year was taking an opportunity from the district and national immunization trip to India. Aimed at Polio eradication worldwide and since Michelle is a nurse by profession so this was right up her ally.  Michelle discussed how Polio is transmitted and the effects on the body.  Jonas Salk developed vaccine in 1955. (a Rotarian too!)  OPV vs. IPV  Where and how does Rotary get involved? Philippines proposal approved in 1979. 1982 cases dropped by 68%  NID: National Immunization Day administer oral vaccine to all children for an entire country. Booths set up in every neighborhood and train and bus station. Door-to-door follow-up to reach children not able to get to booth.  Polio Partner join forces in 1988: WHO, UNICEF, CDC, Rotary  1995 India's First NID, 650,000 booths set throughout India.  Gates Foundation becomes a powerful partner in 2001.  Michelle went to give drops and also to see the sights in India.  Slides of pictures were shown of the conditions in India. Over population, pollution etc…  Why bother? If we do not immunize these children then the numbers will go up in a short amount of time.
