Dr. Melina Uncapher, CEO and cofounder of the Institute for Applied Neuroscience which is a science-for-good non-profit organization was last week’s speaker. Dr. Uncapher started her talk off by sharing that she has been in two serious automobile accidents as a result of other driver’s texting while they when driving. Based on her research she likened it to being under the influence of alcohol in terms of one’s ability to safely operate a vehicle. The Institute is currently partnering with various school districts to share what they are learning about how student learn and better ways to teach. Dr. Uncapher and the Institute are involved in several different applications of their neuroscience research to everyday problems. There was a short update on the BBQ activities that are taking place. Miles Barber reported that a lot of work has been going on behind the scene with respect to the addition of the BBQ Bistro this year. Sales of tables have been very good but there are still some spots available. The BBQ committee is gearing up to present to the club, among other things, the volunteer needs for this year’s event.

Lidia Blair is in the process of forming the Steps for Success committee and identifying the activaties for this event which takes place in the fall.

Don’t forget to sign up for the District 5170 conference taking place this week from April 17-19. You can sign up at by visiting the District 5170 website (http://www.clubrunner.ca/Portal/Home.aspx?accountid=50083

This week’s speaker comes from the Leavey School of Business at Santa Clara University. John Ifcher, Assistant Professor of Economics, has published papers on among other topics, the effect of the Earned Income Tax Credit on happiness. That sounds pretty interesting.
