Message From President Steve Rainbolt

Weekly Club News Update!

Last week’s meeting was on the 13th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks in New York, and Washington D.C. In New York, hijacked passenger jets crash into both towers of the World Trade Center. Both towers collapsed a short time after the attacks. Our guest speaker, Michael Harding was in one of those towers at the time of the attacks. Michael, the partner of our own Colleen Noll, told the story of his own survival and the survival of others on that day. He covered the events he experience from the crash of the aircraft on the first tower followed by the second, his survival from the collapse of the first tower, his trek to a nearby office building where he new many of the workers and the efforts to get those workers back to their families and homes. It was an experience he will obviously never forget and feels strongly that this country must always remember.

Dan Holder read a letter he had written to the Club following the 9/11 attacks sharing the decision made by the Club to go forward with the annual Art & Wine event. The proceeds from the event that year were delivered to the family of Danny Suhr, the first firefighter to die from the attack. The donation was presented in New York by Ted Keech, Anton Morec, George Delucchi and Steve Duffy. Our thanks to you Dan for keeping those moments alive within the Club.

Stan Rose made a case for continued donations to raise funds for classroom supplies. This is in support of the District Governor’s visit on 16 Oct.

The Santa Clara Art and Wine festival was held this past weekend. Proceeds from the sale of Chinese Chicken Salad and Pulled Pork Sandwiches will go to students in the Santa Clara Unified School District. Thanks to Denies Donahue and Mario Bouza along with all those who showed up to work a shift in the booth. Also thanks to Dave DeLozier for his knowledge of the rules associated with the booth set-up.

For this week’s meeting we are in for a Galactic treat. Puragra Guha Thakurta an Astronomer with the University of California Santa Cruz will share with us what is happening outside our word. Don’t miss this one.
