Happy New Year! In the words of Benjamin Franklin (and stealing a little thunder from Mike Pierce) “Be always at war with your vices, at peace with your neighbors, and let each New Year find you a better man.”
Dr. Michael Pierce is in his second term as our Club Secretary and has been a Santa Clara Rotarian for 3 ½ years. He is the owner of Wellness Revolution Health Center and is a practicing Chiropractor.
Our “Club Planker” Anton led us in the pledge. Mike gave the club a very enthusiastic welcome back and inspired us with his humor and great “New Years” quotes to live by. Thank you, Mike.
Bob Gustke reported the passing of Dora Young, wife of Past President, Bill Young. During Past President’s Bob G’s year, Bill was responsible for driving a fully stocked ambulance to Central America, courtesy of the Rotary Club of Santa Clara.
On Monday, January 16 District 5170 will be hosting a “ClubRunner Forum” at the Sunnyvale Ramada Inn from 7 p.m. – 9 p.m. Santa Clara Rotary is looking for a new Web Master to take over for Jan on July 01 and this is an ideal time to learn how to add stories, pictures, text etc. to our website.
Membership Chair, Bob Ricks introduced Lidia and Gerry to give their Club Bio’s. Lidia and Gerry have quickly become very active Santa Clara Rotarians and we are fortunate to have them as new members.
Bob also had the privilege of presenting Colleen her Blue Badge and hit her with the customary $50 fine.
Sue Lawson from the Aptos Rotary Club introduced Raisa Kikteva, Global Ambassador from District 5170. Thank you Raisa for your presentation and it’s always great to see our Rotary Foundation dollars at work!
Happy Birthday wishes to Joe & Don. Did you know that Don and President Dan’s wife, Anna were on the Santa Clara High School Homecoming Court together? The comments that followed have been censored.
Recognized for Wedding Anniversaries were Mohammed and Sarah on December 27 for 20 years (not 11), Steve and Lori on December 28 for 26 years and Laurel and Richard on December 30, 19--…Please update ClubRunner!
Miten was recognized for 11 years with Santa Clara Rotary, however, Miten was also a member during the 50th Anniversary of Santa Clara Rotary and for that, he has been accepted into our $50 Club. Congratulations Miten!
Also recognized for Club Anniversaries were, Dick (32 years), Lorenzo (35 years), Nick L. (36 years), Larry (38 years), Bruce (44 years) and Bud (55 years).
In the Jokers Wild, Diamonds came up for Diamond Mike, but no Joker. The $625 pot continues to grow.
In our second Club Assembly of the year, Stewart announced that Mike Beck will be the Club Treasurer beginning July 01. Stewart also announced that the Valentine Dinner will take place at the Capitol Club on the evening of February 18. The Capitol Club was recently remodeled and will be a wonderful and very classy venue for this event.
Andy has done an outstanding job in providing us excellent programs and will continue to do so in the second half.
Miles gave us an update on the club financials and reported we are in the black. Financial Reports are given at each board meeting so feel free to attend.
Michael Beach and Miles gave us an update on the Santa Clara Rotary Foundation. Scholarships, Christmas for Kids, RYLA, Steps for Success and ELC were discussed on how they are financed. Remember, 80% must go towards Scholarships. The club will continually look to other sources of financing like, Kaiser Permanente (Corporate Sponsors) and Mission City Community Fund, but we also must look to our members for help. Pledge Cards were handed out to members and will be available at the club.
