Weekly Club News Update!

10/20/14

District Governor Club visits always seem to be special. DG Ed Jellen’s visit this past week was no exception. Over the past few years a project has been identified by the incoming district club presidents that would benefit the local community. This year’s presidents picked donating school supplies to schools in a clubs area. Mike Sellers with some help from Stan Rose asked School Principals in the SCUSD what additional supplies they may need to get through the school year. Seventeen schools responded. The Club, as usual, stepped up and raised about $2800. Mike and Pastor Bill purchased the supplies at good prices with the help from our Wal-Mart members Ryan Plesha and Karina Arvizu. About ten Principals attended the meeting and the supplies were distributed to the schools after the meeting. Truly a Rotary moment with the Principal expressing their gratitude.

Recognitions pins were also handed out by DG Ed Jellen based on member donations to The Rotary Foundation this rotary year. Participation to date has been outstanding. There were 27 Double Sustainers, 7 Super Sustainers, and 4 Paul Harris Fellows. And we aren’t done yet. Paul Harris Fellow pins were also handed for donations from the previous rotary year.

Another highlight of the meeting was DG Ed Jellen’s talk how he came into Rotary, how he almost quit, and the event that turned him into a lifelong Rotarian. The meeting really ended on a very high note.

Avenues of Service took place on 15 Oct. About twenty Club members attended and were treated to an outstanding presentation by former Santa Clara Rotarian Rushton Hurley. Andy came through but we may have to rethink the duties of the PE for this event.

This week’s speaker is brought to us by the District’s Partners in Rotary. Lindsay Ford of the Rotary Club of Norfolk Island, Australia is the speaker. Lindsay was recently introduced by a Rotary Institute Conference Chairman, as the most Passionate Rotarian he had ever met, Lindsay tells the story of Rotary, maybe not the Rotary you see, the Rotary you don’t know, the Rotary the community needs to hear about. Yet another meeting not to be missed.

See you all at this Thursday’s meeting.
