Weekly Club News Update!

The Club was dark last week as it was bocce ball night at Campo di Bocce. John Bertolotti was the team organizer and did is usual great job at setting up competitive teams. Thanks John for organizing this annual event and keeping my record clean- zero wins.

Prior to Bocce Ball week the former mayor of San Jose, Chuck Reed, was our speaker. The Mayor spoke about the issues facing cities like San Jose and Santa Clara on the unsustainable raising costs and liabilities to fund public employee pensions and health benefits. He also outlined steps needs to start containing those future liabilities.

Also at that meeting, Suresh Ojha was inducted as the newest member of the Club. Suresh was born in Nepal where a devastating earthquake stuck on April 25. He has family living there and is involved in establishing communication facilities in the country and supporting relief efforts. He spoke of the needs of the country’s citizens who have been displaced by earthquake. The Rotary Club of Santa Clara responded with member donations to purchase Shelter Boxes that can be deployed to the country that will provide basic needs. The Boxes provide people with shelter tents, stoves for cooking and warmth, and other daily essentials. Members donated $4000 and the Club matched $2000 for the purchase of the Shelter Boxes. Marguerite Padovani put together a Press Release about Suresh and the Club donations to help the country. The release was distributed to various news media and appeared in Sal Pizarro San Jose Mercury column on May 10. A BBQ committee meeting was held on May 11. Things are moving along, there are still tables available for the Bistro and there is the need for volunteers. More will be covered at this week’s meeting

This week’s speaker is our own Suds Jain. Suds will be talking about polio and the efforts by Rotary International to eliminate the disease. Suds has experienced polio first hand and this will kick off our Polio Plus Campaign.
