How did your Oscar predictions turn out? Last week’s speaker, Brain Adams, provided some of his predictions and gave some insightful information about the Academy Awards. Brian is a member of the Academy so is allowed to vote on nominations in certain areas. He spoke about what is involved in the nomination process and, if nominated, what the film companies do to bring home the Oscar. He then had a little fun by involving some members in a game of Academy Award Trivia. Brian was a very entertaining speaker and help shed some light on what happens to get a category nomination and what it takes to win in that category.
Pal Alesetty gave his Red Badge talk which was likewise entertaining. If you missed it you might want to ask Pal to share some of the details when you see him.
There was a board meeting prior to last weeks’ meeting where several donation request were approved including a donations to the Northwest YMCA, Operation Surf which works to rehabilitate active duty military who have been wounded, and the Wall that Heels which is a traveling version of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial that will be in the Bay Area April 9-12, 2015emorial.
The Board also approved two donations to the Starting Arts program. One is to provide art instruction to children receiving cancer treatment at Kaiser Hospital in Santa Clara. The second one, which will start this fall, is targeted toward providing art instruction for children attending a Title 1 school in Santa Clara. Ann Watts is the Executive Director of Starting Art and she gave a brief overview of the program at the meeting describing the value of art instruction to youth at an early age.
