Weekly Club News Update!

It is election time again and Measure H in on the ballot for those living in the Santa Clara Unified School District (SCUSD) boundaries. Mark Allgire and Michal Healy of the SCUSD were last week’s speakers and they presented the district’s case for putting the measure on the ballot. The Measure proposes issuing bonds in the amount of $419,000,000. Funds from the bond sale can only be used for infrastructure and development and cannot be used for such items and salaries. The North First street area of San Jose in actually within the Santa Clara Unified School District so as this area continues to be developed there is a need upgrade facilities to support the growing population of students. The text of the Measure explicitly defines the areas where the funds would be used. The use of the funds to add air conditioning to classrooms sparked a lively exchange among the members. To pass , the Measure needs a 55% majority vote.

The last day of Steps for Success 2014 was completed on Oct. 11. The event was held at Scott Lane and George Main elementary schools. We ran out of some shoe sizes but will deliver the proper shoes to those students this week. Thanks to all of you who helped and a special thanks to Lidia and her committee for another successful year. I trust you all had fun and are ready to help next year. And, yes Miles does have shoes for bunny ears.

This is a busy week for our club with the District 5170 Avenues of Service being held on October 15 at the Doubletree Hotel in San Jose from 5:30 PM- 9:00 PM. If you pre-registered, your meal will be paid by the Club. President Elect Andy Ratermann will be your favorite person at the gathering and former Santa Clara Rotarian, and current ELC speake,r Ruston Hurley will give the keynote address.

For this week’s meeting, District Governor Ed Jellen is visiting the Club and is the speaker. The meeting will be marked by the presentation of School Supplies to principals of the SCUSD. We are expecting approximately 10 representatives in attend the meeting. They will receive the supplies purchased using the funds the Club raised. Additionally, Club members will be recognized for their donations to The Rotary Foundation. Let’s show our support for the District Governor by attending the meeting at the Greatest Rotary Club in the World.
