Weekly Club News Update!

Kevin Matheny of KGO/KSFO was the speaker at last week meeting. He provided some perspective on the evolution of Radio Broadcasting stations over the past several decades. A major change took place when rules governing the ownership of Radio stations were modified following the enactment of the Telecommunication Act of 1996 which deregulated ownership of radio stations. Prior to this Act there were limitations on how many radio stations one person or an organization could own. With deregulation there is basically no restriction on the number of stations a company or individual can own for both Radio and TV. The result has been a consolidation of ownership to a handful of large media companies.
Police Chief Mike Sellars, working with Pastor Bill Schultz, is in the process of finalizing purchase of School Supplies to be handed over to Santa Clara School representatives at the District Governors’ Club visit on October 16, 2014. Last year for the District Governors’ visit we presented undergarments to Santa Clara’ Bill Wilson Center. It is a recent development that during the District 5170 Governors’ Club visits donations are given to non profits in the local area in lieu of gifts to the DG’s spouse. This year the District’s Club Presidents voted to make donations of school supplies. To date our Club has raised over $2600 for this project.
Please remember that The Rotary Foundation (TRF) drive for 2014-2015 is underway. Make your donation check out to Rotary International and either mail them to the Santa Clara Rotary Club, P. O. Box 111, Santa Clara, CA 95052 or bring the check to a meeting and give it to Ted Moorhead, myself or Miles Barber. Donations are tax deductable. Let’s achieve 100% participation this year.
This past Saturday, Oct 4, the first day for Steps to Success 2014 was held at Montague and Briarwood elementary schools. Shoes and books were passed to students. Thanks to all of the Club Members and Interacters who spent their Saturday morning helping at the schools. This Saturday, Oct. 11, Steps will be held and George Main and Scott Lane schools. Please check your e-mail or with Lidia Blair for the times you have signed up to work a shift.
This week we will hear from two members of the Santa Clara Unified School District. Michal Healy and Mark Allgire will present information on Measure H which is on the Nov. 4 ballot. The Measure is to provide infrastructure funding to support future growth of the Santa Clara Unified School District. This will be a very informative meeting.
