I hope you were able to join us on Thursday to hear Hal Hendrickson talk about the Boy Scouts of America.  Hal is Vice President- Executive Board Member of the Silicon Valley Monterey Bay Council. The presentation brought back good childhood memories.  The zoom meeting recording link is below.

You must read Bob Rick's recap.  You might be surprised to learn that one of our PP's was den chief in Pack 369.   See if you can point him out in the photo.  The recap is attached.

Please complete the very short survey that I sent you and have a wonderful week

The Greatest Rotary Club in the World: Santa Clara, California
Meeting Excitement and Notes: March 18, 2021
Mike Sellers, President and Head Zoomer
Bob Ricks, Humble Scribe
John Mlnarik, Zoom Technology

Zoomers in attendance:    34 dedicated Rotarians escaped their Covid Captivity Boredom and tuned in today. Other SC Rotarians are missing in action at the mall to celebrate our governor’s release for indoor dining or home watching Dr. Phil reruns.  Still shooting for 40 plus.

After the GRCITW shout out Thomas brought us words of wisdom from the man that needs no introduction: John Wooden, the Wizard of Westwood. Coach Wooden, as coach of UCLA, won 10 of 12 NCAA basketball National Championships and 7 in a row. His words, “If you are true to yourself you will be true to others” is still valid today as yesterday. Thomas followed up those words with the advice to treat yourself like a champion. If you do that you will continue to get better and be ready to face the adversity in life that is guaranteed to hit you at some point. Well said.

Our own scout leader, Jan Eric Nordmo, led us in the pledge. He was not asked to fold a flag properly so we cannot know if he has learned that. I was remiss and did not copy him in his full Boy Scout uniform. It was impressive.

I tried to find my uniform, shoulder braid included, but it is in the Boy Scout Museum now:
I tried to whip this team into shape. It was a lot like being president of a Rotary Club……….early training from Scouting.

Our guests on Zoom today were Jason Stein from the Rotary Club of San Jose along with Bobby Toda, Heather Learner, Ed Chang, and Margaret Caldwell. Welcome to all and thanks for tuning in.

President Mike has done it! Zero! No birthdays, no weddings, no Rotary Anniversary, no new cars, no vacations, no nothing!  If your special day for any of these falls from March 15 to March 22 please let the scribe know. We may be able to get a special fine instituted for a sitting president.

Larry Fargher is back at Kaiser for tests. Lois reports the tests results so far are good, but they are keeping Larry for a few more nights observations. Send your prayers in Larry’s direction. He has been a key member and mentor in this club for many, many years.

Don Skinner reported that he is well enough now for people to start kidding him again. So, let your conscience be your guide. Warren Buffett has already started on Don.

A Night of Bonding!

Tressa Williams reported on a Night of Bonding Event on March 19 for the Interact kids. This event will begin as our Shots Project ends. Adults are invited as the kids want to get to know us. Please let Teressa know if you can attend. Full information is on the link below:

Speaking of Interact, Blake Levins reported to President Mike that the Interact’s recent project to help small business contributed over $10,000 to the coffers of small business in the area. Well done, Blake!

Steps:  We are staffed up and ready to go! If you signed up to help you should have received an email from Dan with final details. Be there at 2 pm sharp!

Welcome Back:  Our annual PP BBQ event will be called the Welcome Back Fellowship this year. It will be at the Elks Club on June 10 and start at 4 pm instead of lunch. Social Distancing will be in place. It will be a great time for all to finally get together in person again.

Happy Hour:  It was another fun gathering last Tuesday. We had around 17 Rotarians with Tales to Tell. Your Humble Scribe got to detail his driving trip from Austin, Texas to Pacific Grove. ( We had to sign “No” on the recall petition to be allowed to enter the state). Easy Perez got to explain why he always wears two pairs of pants when golfing…...in case he gets a hole in one. (You had to be there).

You also get to enjoy things like this at Happy Hour:
It does not get much better than this. Heath has already taught Hope two jokes…..both clean. She will be ready for the speech contest in no time.

Foundation:  Andy Ratermann reported results on the last Foundation Board meeting. We have developed a new investment policy and committee to oversee the investments. We set up a PayPal account to handle payments and receipts more efficiently. The Board voted to donate $6000 to this year’s virtual ELC program.

Hal Hendrickson was introduced by Easy Perez after a little grumbling about his two pair of pants golf joke being botched by President Mike.

Hal comes from a Scouting family. Both his mom and dad were very involved adult scout leaders as were all his brothers. They were Scout Family of the Year a few years ago. Hal himself was Morgan Hill Man of the Year. He was here to update us on the following scout topics and celebrate their 100th year of helping kids.
Hal showed a video of some of the past history of the Silicon Valley Monterey Bay Council through the years. One photo in the video stood out to Ted Keech. It was of our own John Nicholson, a long time Santa Clara Rotarian. John and his family were major contributors to all things Scouting. His legacy lives on.
It was a very interesting presentation on one of the great institutions for our kids. I personally have fond memories of my time in both Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. Camp Tonkawa generated some fantastic stories. I learned what a kiboe hopper is. (Don’t Google, only in Texas). My Scoutmaster was Aubrey Keele. He held our group to high standards and made our meetings and camp outs fun and educational.

As an adult yourself you finally learn to appreciate the hard work our Aubrey Keele’s put into teaching us as kids. Too bad we did not realize that as an 11 year old Scout. My congratulations and Thanks go to Hal and Andy and the other adults that work with our kids every week.

Next Week: Andy has done it again. Our speaker will be Dereck Muller, Ice Shelf Expert. Andy promises the talk will be informative and interesting. Call your Non-Zoomer friends. We still need 40 Rotarians to show up.

Carver MIA:

Carver was a no show today at our club but was actively engaged in Lakeway/Lake Travis Club. Here he stands to invite his club to a pool warming party. Details to follow………….
