I would like to thank everyone who attended our zoom meeting on Thursday. Following is Bob Rick's recap which is a must read. Our guest speaker was Phil McKinney who was an excellent presenter. I have attached the zoom link so you can watch his entire presentation. I would encourage everyone to attend our weekly meetings. This coming week, Andy arranged for Andra Watkins to speak about several of her books that she authored. It should be an interesting program. Hope to see you on Thursday. Attendance: The last time I checked today we had 39 Zoomers on board. Not good. We have some members that bought their first computer last year and they were on the broadcast. A few were dialed in from distant states. Check in next week! Remember: We offer remedial, confidential Zoom lessons. Call or email President Mike…..he will be kind. Sweeney, now in a less influential club, may have a T-shirt for you.
The Greet and Inspiration: Joe (free tire rotation) Hart was our Greeter and had some words of wisdom…..”Don’t think too much. You’ll create a problem that wasn’t there anyway”......Joe discovered that quote while playing golf. He claims it took 4 shots off Gary Citti’s game. Other members have been doing this for years with no results.
Guest: Another shout out to Katherine Tatley from Paychex. She is close to joining our club. Welcome! We will see you next week.
Birthdays and Anniversaries:
Joe Hart celebrated his 77th birthday on July 17 by driving his Lexus demonstrator all the way to the top of Half Dome. (Car is now available for sale). Unfortunately two climbers did not hear him on the approach. Joe then made it to the top of Yosemite Falls, waited for dark, and tossed in some old firecrackers over the top. Luckily he escaped prior to the Rangers arriving. Now THAT is a Rotarian!
John Mlnarik will again celebrate his birthday on July 25 by watching the old Raymond Burr series Perry Mason. No family member is allowed in the Milnarik media room on this date as John takes copious notes. I suspect he may be watching Della Street more than Perry Mason. Note: Perry booked at $10 per hour.
John Elwood will also be celebrating on July 25. All his buddies at Apple have invited John over to the space ship for a few drinks and another walk through to see all the Italian art John secured for them. Great story. Ask John when you see him.
Hope Hanich celebrated her one hour birthday on July 16. Congratulations to Heath and Heidi on their new daughter. Life is good.
Mike Moul and Joanne celebrated 43 years of marriage…..TODAY!. Joanne had invited 20 close friends for an all day celebration, but Mike did not miss his Zoom appearance.
Tom Brown and Kim will celebrate 27 years on July 27. Tom says it is easy to remember the date as his daughter’s birthday is 3 days later. He always knows he missed the anniversary as he wishes his daughter Happy Birthday. Somehow I think this may happen again this year.
Club Notes:
The food distribution project will continue for a few more weeks.
Cystic Fibrosis: Our club made a $1500 donation to this annual fundraiser. PP Lou Ann Alexander, a major supporter, will have her annual fundraiser walk rescheduled to May 2021. Details will be available as we get closer.
Blood Drive: Please contact John Mlnarik if you would like to donate blood. John sponsors a major blood donation campaign each year at his office. This year the Stanford van will be there on July 31. It is easy and the hospitals need blood.
Club Survey: Watch your emails….or mail. Dr. Stella Kemp is sending out a club survey to get feedback from all members on how we proceed in this age of Covid. Please take a few minutes and respond with your feedback.
Red Badge Meeting: PP Colleen Noll sponsored a Red Badge and Mentor meeting yesterday. We currently have 9 “Jan Eric Nordmo Red Badgers” in the club. If any of those Red Badgers think they will break Nordmo’s Red Badge Record they are misinformed. Jan keeps tabs on these people. Do NOT attempt to go for the record! Just earn your Blue Badge and move on.
Colleen gave an honorary Red Badge to mentor Phil Auger. Phil forgot about the meeting. Something about his daughter’s birthday party. Phil is now the only 40+ year member of Rotary to be moved BACK to Red Badge. This will not count as beating Jan Eric’s record.
Comment: Did anyone notice Lorenzo’s name on the Zoom? Lorenzo”What did he say?” Rios is his Zoom Moniker. This made me feel better. PP Lorenzo Rios was the President of the Club in 1996 when I joined. Thankfully I joined in April so I only had to wait till July 1 to find out what we were doing in the club.
Speaker: PP Dan Holder, SC Rotary Secretary of State, introduced our speaker Phil McKinney, author of the book Beyond the Obvious. Phil joined us from his home in Colorado. He retired from HP as CTO and now consults for many major companies as well as doing much charitable work. Andy Ratterman met Phil when both served on the Boy Scout board in San Jose. This was a presentation that I highly recommend any non-Zoomers watch. The full presentation is on Club Runner. I cannot do justice to Phil’s presentation in this short summary.

Phil now works in Human Creativity and creating the future. He looks ahead 5 to 15 years. He made the point that the Top 10 jobs in the US today did not exist in 2006. Many members have jeans older than that. Some still use Palm Pilots so this may be a shock.
Phil also made the comment that the #1 skill CEO’s look for in new employees is CREATIVITY. This does not mean looking for a person with ideas. Phil made the point that ideas on a note pad are worthless. His mantra is “ Ideas made Real.” Your kids would enjoy his comments as they enter college.
