Meeting Recap August 6, 2020

 

 

We had another good speaker this past week.  If you missed our meeting or would like to hear Bob Rick's inspiration, please click on the zoom link below.  Our special guest was storyteller Vishavjit Singh.  He believes if we all knew each other's story, discrimination would not exist.  I would encourage everyone to watch his presentation.

Andy Ratermann continues to schedule great presenters.  Next week, Bob Ray will speak at our club for the fourth time.  In the past he has presented on the Beach Boys, Hitsville USA: The Motown Story and Crooners' Sentimental Journey.  Each presentation is educational and entertaining. You can't miss this one.

Zoom Attendance: We tapped out at 38 Zoomers online today. We should be way over 40 at every meeting. We hope to see some new Zoomers next week. Instructions: Go to the App Store on your iPhone. Search for Zoom. Download the app. Then when you open the app, click on Join. It will ask you for a meeting number. Mike emails this to you. Type in the meeting number and then the requested password that you also receive from Mike. Then click JOIN WITH VIDEO. Bingo! You will be online with your fellow Rotarians. It is that simple. ….have your hair combed.

 

Inspiration: Your humble scribe had two choices for inspiring words: Go to the famous Mario Bouza book of inspiration or use Theodore Roosevelt. I opted for one of Mr. Roosevelt’s best known quotes, appropriate then as now:

 

“It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit goes to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly;....who at best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly.”

Visitors:    Jenny Thuong visited the club again and was welcomed by President Mike.

 

Club Anniversaries:  Dr. Stella Kemp and Ana Vargas-Smith are both celebrating one year with TGZRCITW. Thanks to both of them for their active involvement over the past 12 months. If you have not done so try to meet Ted Keech at some point. We save him until a new member has been around over 12 months.

 

There were no birthdays to announce. If you had one and President Mike missed it try to fine him. We need a laugh.

 

Club Survey:  Our club survey, emailed to all members, has 38 responses to date. The due date was August 6. We need as many surveys as possible detailing as many ideas and suggestions to keep this club moving onward and upward. Get in the arena and participate. If you are one of the slackers, please DVR that upcoming episode of Bonanza and use that time to steal a Covid 19 quarantined minute and complete the survey. It will be appreciated.

 

San Jose Rotary Club:  President Mike announced that the humongous SJ Rotary Club is being segregated from the other clubs in Area 5 and will be creating their own Area 10 next year. Their main focus will be for all the older members to finally meet some of the newer  members and then move on to bigger things. This project will start on July 1, 2021. ADG and PP Joe Sweeney, a newer member, will introduce you to the four members he knows if you attend the club as a guest.

 

Tuesday Happy Zoom Hour:  President Mike announced that the Red Badgers failed to show in number to compete with the Blue Badgers. Only Stella Kemp and Ed Bouwhuis appeared to throw questions at the astute gathering of Blue Badgers. The twosome had a brave effort but all was for nought. Jan Eric Nordmo’s name meant nothing to Stella and Ed. The Blues took the night.

 

Note: Phil Auger once again offered Club Historian Ed Bouwhuis something from his archives: The knife he loaned Paul Harris to cut the ribbon on Rotary HQ Grand Opening in Evanston. I fear Ed will be requesting additional budget to find storage for Phil’s stuff. Rumor has it that next up will be the shirt Charlie Wasser sold him cheap with Rotary spelled as Rotery. Phil wore it to three District conferences before someone asked him about it. He then wore it only seven more years before it went into his archives.

 

August 10, 1936 to August 10, 2020:  Our club was chartered 84 years ago on August 10. We only have a few members remaining from that initial meeting and you know who they are. It has been an amazing run with much accomplished. There is more to come. All should call PP Dan Holder on this date so his phone will again RING in celebration as it did on the stage at our 75th anniversary party. This would mean a lot to Dan. The first caller may get a paperweight…..no guarantee.

 

School Supply Drive:  CJ Grewal, Andy Ratermann and Teresa Williams all were at the Santa Clara schools delivering school supplies for needy students that were donated by our club. They were accompanied by two wobbly dinosaurs (PP Colleen Noll and Debra the worker bee York). Along with the actual supplies our members also donated $375 in cash to use to purchase even more supplies. This was Santa Clara Rotary “in the arena” again. Well done!

 

Hope Hanich is doing Great!  New father and old jokester, Heath Hanich, was in the Zoom Pod to report that new daughter Hope, born July 16, is doing well and gaining weight daily. They had Heidi’s mom to help with week One and Heath’s parents to assist in week Two. Now the big test: Heath and Heidi are on their own…...stay tuned.

 

One word of encouragement: My brother’s daughter was born on July 16 also. I felt sorry for the kid at the time as I knew my brother, but my brother and his wife actually pulled it off…..she is 37 now with a kid of her own. It can be done…..my brother did it. This even surprised my mother.

 

Speaker: Jimmy Fallon (aka Ken Rowell) was back in fine form to introduce our speaker all the way from Harlem. The speaker must have heard about Jimmy as he asked Jimmy to keep the intro short. Jimmy actually complied as he introduced storyteller Vishavjit Singh. Ken had to go to Andy for the pronunciation, so you know it was a tough one.
