Meeting Recap August 27, 2020

 

 

Last week, Jeffery Nott spoke to our membership about the planning process to write a book.   His presentation was very interesting and offered much more.  I have attached the recording link and password below for your review.  I have also attached Bob Ricks famous Rotary Recap.  I hope to see you at our Happy Hour or meeting this week.  Enjoy!

Zoomer Attendance:  We tapped out today at 35 attendees. Hopefully the reruns of Bonanza will soon end and we can add more. Even PP Miten Marfatia once again used his hacking skills to attend with full video.

 

Pledge of Allegiance:  Old Smokey and future president, Bill Kelly, led us in the pledge. No #7 SF jerseys were seen in the group and we said the ENTIRE pledge.

 

Greeting and Inspiration: DGIW and PP Jan-Eric Nordmo led us in the greeting and inspiration. Jan had some great insight regarding his current business difficulties, some words of wisdom from the Bible and ended with the thought, “ If you need a hand or can give a hand, just do it!”. People are hurting now and if you can give assistance, go for it. This too will pass. Jan also mentioned an interesting book, THE BUSINESSMAN’S TOPICAL BIBLE, that is an excellent resource in these tough times.

 

Visiting Rotarians: Eddie Everett from Flemings Restaurant again visited our club. Welcome back Eddie! Gary Citti and family will be heading your way this week. Be sure he brings flowers…...Leroy had this locked in.

 

Kelly Yamanishi on August 24. Tim Ford on August 27. PPx2 Bill Carver on August 29. Tim Ford had a good day as he still has his home after the fires.

On August 29 Gary and Linda Citti will celebrate anniversary #39. Get ready Flemings! Congratulations!

 

Larry Kaiser is celebrating three years in our club on August 24. PP Nick Streit is celebrating over 37 years in TGRCITW. Wow!

 

We Care: After 50+ years of penciling car deals it finally caught up to Joe Hart. He is recovering from carpal tunnel syndrome surgery.  Joe will be unable to complete his promised free tire rotations until he is fully recovered. Stay turned.

 

Warning:  I know what you are thinking. He looks like Ted Keech, but is he Ted Keech? Yes, it is our own loquacious PP Ted. Seems like Ted ran into a guy he booked into jail years ago. The guy is now doing sidewalk haircuts to avoid licensing requirements. Ted offered him $2.00 and the rest is history. The former prisoner got his revenge and Ted left 6 months hair growth in a back alley in Santa Clara.

 

Club Survey: Dr. Stella Kemp (certified Longhorn) reviewed the results of our recent club survey. We had 49 responses. One key response was the question on club social events. Forty two of the 49 were in favor of more club socials. All seemed to like wine. President Mike noted that we are trying to schedule a Covid approved social event for the weekend normally reserved for the Art and Wine Festival. Stay tuned for details. Fire: Tim Ford and Frank Walsh are okay. Their homes made it through the fires. Teresa Williams is back at home in Morgan Hill after evacuation. Andrew Lucia did not lose his house. It is great to hear all are well and homes are intact.

 

HH:  We are going to try it again. Meet at Jack Holder’s on Tuesday, September 1 for a live HH. A visiting member from the Rotary Club of San Jose will be serving tables and cleaning dishes due to his skipped check from last week. PP and Bellman Joe Sweeney will accept tips. Hope to see you there, Starts at 4:30. Ends? If you attend PP Dan Holder will show you a photo of his 7th grandchild, Kyle Jean Connelly, even if you do not ask.

 

Rebuild Together:   PE Bill Kelly has the date for our next rebuild project. This will be our third effort. It will be a Santa Clara vet on the last weekend of October. Details to follow.

 

Steps: Dan Winter is the chair for this year. We are planning a drive by shoe distribution this year because of Covid. The plan now is to schedule it on October 31 with a Halloween theme. Dan will be asking for your assistance soon.

 

Parade:  Ana Vargas-Smith reports this year will be a virtual parade. (This bummed out Walt Marwitz, was in Vietnam, as he was set to build another award winning float.). This year each parade entry will produce a video for submission...15 to 60 seconds. We will be requesting photos from events from all members as we produce our video. Stay turned. Date is September 26.

        Note: President Mike has emailed a Rotary blue backdrop to all members to use as their backdrop on our Zoom meeting. He will soon send instructions as to how to make this your backdrop on Zoom as we will need this for our Parade video.

 

Next week: CJ Gaby will have a great presentation on parking…..one you never thought about.

 

Don Bestwick will follow the week after with a speech on SOMETIMES A SERGEANT.

 

On October 8 we will have Susan Helms, astronaut, veteran of 5 shuttle missions and numerous walks in space. This one should be very interesting.

Today’s Speaker:  Our own Jimmy Fallon (aka Ken Rowell), introduced today’s speaker, Jeff Nott. Jeff has a varied career running a chain of gas stations, auto repair shops, business coach and now author. His topic was:

His completed book is 1 WEEK 1 THING. Jeff regaled us with tales of how he finally got around to writing his book and then actually getting it published. His tips on leadership and business coaching were timely. Check out his book for some outstanding insights on getting things done in your business.

 

NEXT WEEK:  All Zoomers should check in early next week. Around 12:15. President Mike will then send you into a separate Zoom breakout room of no more than 5 members. This will allow you to chat in smaller groups prior to the start of the main meeting. The entire group will then come together as the main meeting begins. I realize the Stammtisch gang will be nervous about this, but we ask their assistance in meeting different members of our club.
