This Week's Speaker:
Bob Ray
An interview with Tommy James and the Shondelles

If you missed the Rotary meeting on Thursday, you really missed a great program.  Bob Ray was our guest speaker and he had Rock Legend Tommy James on the telephone.  Bob and Tommy gave all of us another fantastic presentation even on zoom.  Please read Bob Rick's recap for all the details. Be sure to scroll down Bob's entire recap for photos and additional comments.

I know everyone has been waiting for this moment, but I finally screwed up.  Lou Ann Alexander notified me today that Watana had posted a photo of his son on Facebook.  For full disclosure, Bob Ricks mentioned to me last week he thought he heard something about a new Rotary baby.

I called Watana and confirmed he and his wife had a healthy, beautiful boy on June 23rd.  His name is Khilo Maximo Heang.

image    Wait a minute!  Khilo was actually born during Colleen's presidency!  This is the second Rotary baby born this year and next month Nima and Mahtab are expecting their first child. Congratulations again to Watana and Ivana

Zoomer Count:  We got to 38 fired up Zoomers this meeting. All are vying for the Honor of the Z Team award once we meet again in person. A Zoom song is in development as we write….do not tell “You know who”.

The Pledge:   There were plenty of  Zoom photos of various belt buckles and waists as all stood for our Zoom Pledge of Allegiance. No kneeling. Dave Cowan led the pledge. Welcome back Dave!

Inspiration: Larry Kaiser had the words of wisdom today and they were well timed. “Some people have problems they cannot control” as we continue with the Covid 19 pandemic. “All people will handle these problems differently but just remember that God will never give you something you cannot handle. Tough times never last but tough people do. Be strong. “

Guests:
Jenny Thuong was again a guest. We all look forward to meeting Jenny personally at the end of the pandemic lockdown.

Eddie Everett from Flemings Restaurant was a first time visitor and guest of Bob Buchser. Eddie replaced stellar member Leroy Godfrey at Flemings and is interested in our club. Eddie, be prepared for receiving flowers from Citti’s Florist. Gary likes the best table while eating there. Welcome to our club.

Kudos:
Transplanted Texan Bill Carver attended two Rotary Clubs in one day. First he attended the Lake Travis Rotary in person then he rushed home to log into Santa Clara’s Zoom meeting. That two hour time difference helps.

Birthdays and Anniversaries:
PP Terry Rose, “the year of the Rose” celebrated on August 10. We miss seeing Terry either in person or on the Zoom. President Mike please send PP Miten out on a search party. Miten knows where Terry hides out. We need to get him back among the newer members as Terry is one of the most active and helpful members of this club. Happy Birthday!

Daniel Peck celebrated on August 12. Daniel is probably kicking back and taking it easy as Mission College is all buttoned up and ready to go in the Year of Covid……..well, maybe not. Happy Birthday!

PP Miles Barber, the Lodestone for the City Council of Santa Clara and our own Rotary Milestone, will be celebrating on August 15. Gary Citti reports an uptick on flower orders from the council, but due to HIPPA floral regulations cannot report any names as the flowers were purchased with campaign funds.  Happy Birthday Miles!

Tucker Lasecke celebrates 38 years in TGRCITW this week. Tucker is another great member that still supports our club while living out of town. Tucker: Thanks for all you do for our club. I don’t think any Rotarian ever stole a lamp from Eastern Furniture at all those fun Christmas wrapping parties held in your store.

We Care:  Continue to keep PP Nick Streit in your thoughts.

Our sympathy to Linda Citti on the death of her father this week in Boise, Idaho. Linda had been spending a lot of time going back and forth to help out her mother during this time.

Board Meeting Notes:
Our support for JW House will continue with Roy Truit again at the helm replacing Leroy Godfrey. The Board decided to donate $100 per month to JW for the next six months and wait until post-Covid to start our personal support again.

Club Survey: Thanks for all that completed the survey. Those that had a full streaming schedule and were unable to complete the survey have our support. This week try YELLOWSTONE. Stella Kemp will be recapping and reporting the results in the next few weeks.

Steps for Success: Dan Winter is leading the charge for this annual program. Changes are in the works due to Covid. This week our foundation donated $10,000 to support the effort but we need to determine how we are going to get the shoes to the kids. Contact Dan with any ideas.

Building Together: President-Elect Bill Kelly is the lead here and has determined a family to help in Santa Clara. The Program will probably be implemented in September of October.

Membership Seminar: President Mike announced a District Membership Seminar for Saturday, August 15. If you receive this letter in time and want to participate you need to register. Contact Mike.

Our Speaker:  The Return of Bob Ray!
PP Dan Holder handled the introduction of Bob Ray…...a man who needs no introduction to this club as Bob has been with us three other times.

Bob is a flower child of the 60s that morphed into a DATING GAME TV show producer, local DJ, long time advertising guy and all knowing expert on the history of Rock and Roll and their legends. Bob grew up among the streets of LA as his mother taught school to local child stars. He is always a popular speaker at our club. We had to apologize to Bob for a few CHAT questions on “what is MTV” and why are the TV spots in black and white?

Bob’s topic this week was Tommy James and the Shondelles. True to form Bob even had Tommy James in person on Zoom to help tell his story and answer questions.
