In the attached recap, you'll find a sign-up sheet for our November 7th social event at the San Jose Earthquakes match with FC Dallas.  This promises to be a fun event for all Rotarians and their guests. If you would like to join the fun, please contact me to have your name put on the list.

Our guest speaker next week will be The Honorable Alejandra Bologna, Council General for Mexico in San Jose.  This promises to be an exciting and informative meeting as we hear about issues related to our relationship with Mexico and her role as a local representative in the South Bay..

        Weekly Recap

President Bill Kelly

September 16, 2021

It was nice to see visiting Rotarian John Mlnarik yesterday, visiting from the Omaha West Rotary club in Nebraska.  It was a festive atmosphere in the room as we kept our meeting short, and then dropped by Rotarian Larry Fargher’s home to help him celebrate his 89th birthday.

Meeting Highlights

Pledge:  This time, the Pledge was led by Rotarian Satish Ullal. Thanks Satish for kicking off the program.

Inspiration: This week, our inspiration came from Past President, Jan Eric Nordmo.  He passed along some sad news regarding the declining health of Arlynne Diamond, a former Rotarian. Jan Eric led the group in prayer, and kept us focused on the many blessings each of us enjoy. Thanks Jan Eric.

Birthdays:  Happy Birthday to Larry Fargher, who celebrated his 89th birthday on the day our weekly Rotary meeting. After the abbreviated meeting, club members enjoyed cake and refreshments at Larry’s Santa Clara home.  Happy Birthday, Larry.  Thanks for all of your contributions over the years to our club, to the greater Rotary organization, and to our Mission City community.  It was a pleasure to see you on your special day!

Anniversaries:  Congratulations to Bob and Carol Buchser on celebrating your September 15th anniversary. No wonder you missed the meeting today; probably off celebrating this important occasion.

Rotary Anniversaries: There were two Rotary anniversaries this week:  Betty Carmody (September 13), and Kelly Yamanishi (September 15).  Happy Rotary Anniversary!

We Care: No new reports from Don Skinner this week, however, Jan Eric passed along some news that former Rotarian Arlynne Diamond is suffering from extremely poor health. Please keep Arlynne in your thoughts and prayers.

Upcoming events:

  • Relay for Life event, is October 2nd.

  • The Parade of Champions is October 9th.

  • Rose Academies benefit golf tournament October 16th.

  • Rotary Day at the Earthquakes is November 7.

President’s Report:

  • The American Cancer Society, Relay for Life Santa Clara, occurs on Saturday October 2nd from 9am to 2 pm.  Please feel free to join the effort by walking around Townsend field to honor those affected by cancer.  On October 1, the Relay for Life is sponsoring a Luminaria event, in which you can participate.  You can dedicate a candle to a loved one. These candles will be on display at the Franklin Mall in front of the Post Office on Friday evening October 1.  The Club is donating $1.500 to the Relay, but individuals can offer additional support if desired.  See their website for more details.

  • Our parade planning team held a meeting last night to discuss plans for our parade float.  Volunteer opportunities exist to help prepare for the big event.  We need helpers as we build our float. We’re looking for creativity, and/or some muscle to help in constructing the float.  Please contact Bill Kelly to sign up for the team.

  • The Rose Academies benefit golf tournament is scheduled for October 16th at Spring Valley golf course.  If you would like to sign up and golf in the tournament or learn more about their organization, visit their website.

  • We are having a Rotary social event on November 7th at the San Jose Earthquakes match against FC Dallas.  This event is open to Rotarians and their guests and includes a tailgate event before the game.  Please contact Bill Kelly to sign up for the event.  Parking passes are also available for purchase.  See signup sheet below for more details.

Keynote Speaker:

Our guest speaker was Heather Schomaker from the Wheelchair Foundation. The Foundation has a goal to provide a free wheelchair to every child, teen and adult worldwide who needs one, but has no means to acquire one. This is a cause that is supported by Rotary District 5170 and is encouraging all clubs to support this effort. The Foundation definitely performs important work to help those in need.  Several fellow Rotarians signed up to donate for this worthy cause.

Our guest speaker next week will be The Honorable Alejandra Bologna, Council General for Mexico in San Jose.  This promises to be an exciting and informative meeting as we hear about issues related to our relationship with Mexico.
