It was an interesting meeting, at which we learned from our guest speaker about the current conditions in Afghanistan and their effects on the Rotary Club of Kabul. Keynote Speaker:
Our guest speaker this week was Keith Blackey, who has been working in Afghanistan and Iraq, setting up new Rotary clubs and youth Scouting units. He just returned from Afghanistan and provided an in-depth report on conditions in the country. Keith has been doing this work for decades and is a tremendously accomplished Rotarian. Keith explained that the fall of the Afghan government has had severe consequences on the Rotary Club of Kabul. At the end of his presentation, Keith offered members the ability to purchase saffron spice, the proceeds of which will go to reimbursing the Afghans who produced the spice, and to efforts to reduce polio worldwide. It was an interesting and informative presentation.
Our speaker next week will be Lee Booth. Chief Booth currently serves as the Field Chief of Police of the United States Bullion Depository (commonly known as the “Gold Vault”), Fort Knox, KY. He began his career with the Depository in 1998 and has served as a police officer, police Sergeant, Detective, Lieutenant, Inspector and Special Operations Commander. As the Field Chief, he serves as the senior Mint official at the facility, as well as the senior law enforcement officer of the Mint Police at Fort Knox. He is only the 9th person in the history of the Depository to hold this position. You’ll want to hear his presentation, for sure.
