I hope you were able to join us on Thursday to listen to Derek Mueller talk about Ice Shelves.  Derek is a professor at Carleton University.  It was a very interesting presentation and I have attached the recording link below for your review.  Please enjoy and read Bob Ricks recap of our meeting.  He continues to amaze me with his writing skills.  Plus he has been nice to me all year.

Please be safe and stay healthy!  See you all next week.

The Greatest Rotary Club in the World: Santa Clara, California
California Approved Covid Notes: March 25, 2021
Mike Sellers, President and Zoom King
Bob Ricks, Humble Scribe, back in the Golden State
John Mlnarik: Zoom Tech and Nebraska Wanna Be

Zoomers in attendance: We got it up to 32 before the ice melted. Still shooting for 40 plus. Please tell your fellow SC Rotarians you are not required to wear a mask on Zoom broadcasts…..but beware. ….some unscrupulous leader may lure you to the screen and catch you sleeping peacefully.

President Mike had this one wired…….Buchser! Trouble was, Mlnarik would not release the master Mute button. Bob pledged twice in Mute, then called for Heath, but our president finally got it covered. Another fallout from Covid.

Easy was on target today. “We have gone through a year of darkness and loneliness, but do not despair. Hope will get us through. According to Dr. King, everything in the world is done by Hope”. Well said Easy. Thanks.

Bill Carver tuned in from Texas. He took a break from the Lakeway/Lake Travis Rotary Club members frolicking in his new swimming pool. He now knows that you do not issue a casual invitation to any Texan. Needs more Holder Margarita Mix.

Bob Ricks is now in California and still scribing…...although the time difference adjustment Texas v California is playing havoc on him during Zoom Meetings. Gavin knows and approves this message.

Kevin Pfeil visited our club today from Morgan Hill. He is a Red Badger in Morgan Hill and our club was his required visit for any future Rotarian. Welcome Kevin.

Suds Jain, former SC Rotarian, and now leading Santa Clara through all their lawsuits as a member of the city council, visited us again. Great to see you Suds. I think Randy Attermann did get your name correct…...for once.

President Mike had a special CONGRATULATIONS for Blake Levins…..the 2021-2022 Interact District Governor.

Blake beat out DGIW Jan-Eric Nordmo in a close race. Well done Blake and thanks for all your help to our club this year.

Happy Birthday to Stella and Nick.

Special wishes to Easy and Cathy on their 26th anniversary on March 26. John Mlnarik has shipped his entire VHS collection of Matlock and Perry Mason shows to Easy for a weekend long Attorney Stream in celebration. Easy even found a seersucker suit at Goodwill and will be wearing it during the Matlock shows.

Jan-Eric was missing in action on his 22nd Rotary anniversary….the lost to Blake hit him hard. Daniel Peck was also missing in action for his 7th. Thanks to both members for their contributions to our club.

Larry is back home. He has gout in his arm and leg. This makes him uncomfortable. Lois reports that he needs another month to fully recover. Our prayers go out to Larry. He has mentored and sponsored unknown numbers of new members to this club. Larry is a leader. He is what we use to describe a Santa Clara Rotarian. Keep Larry in your thoughts.

Honduras Project:  PP Lorenzo reported on our Honduras project. The four boxes were received. The first three boxes contained clothing for the Hondurans and were much appreciated. They all fit well and were much appreciated. The fourth box contained winter clothing and President Biden’s poster. All in all, the recipients appreciated our assistance. Thanks to Lorenzo and Harbir for coordinating this effort.

Welcome Back:  Mark your calendars. The date is May 20 at the Elks Club. This will be a live event in the afternoon. Details to follow.

PP BBQ:  This annual tradition was created by PP Bob Buchser in the 80s. It is always a fun time. We may get Sweeney and Rainbolt in town to sign autographs. The date to save is June 10 at the Elks. Some of you may even see President Sellers in person for the first time. The stories alone are worth the price of admission.

Vietnam War Veterans Day March 29:  This is a day dedicated by our government to recognize those men and women that served our country during the Vietnam conflict…..either in Vietnam or in uniform somewhere else. We have two Santa Clara Rotary members that actually served in-country during the war: Ted Keech and Walt Marwitz. A special thanks goes to these two men. Well done, guys….and Thanks. It was a difficult time in our history.

Steps for Success:
Thanks to all that showed up at Wilcox HS on March 19 for Steps for Success. This was our second effort for the year. We donated another 290 pairs of shoes to needy kids.

The Family Resource Center was a major participant as were members Tim Ford for food and Tom Brown for needed trucks. Even your humble Scribe and his wife Betty drove in from Texas to assist. This is one of our great projects and should not be missed by any member. Dan Winter did it again…...a smooth operation.

Ken Rowell (aka Jimmy Fallon) introduced our Guest Speaker, Derek Mueller.

Derek is an expert on Ice Shelves. His presentation briefed us on the studies now going on to monitor the loss of these valuable assets. He sponsors a yearly trek to the shelf’s called Students on Ice to help new scholars understand what is occurring. He spoke to us from Canada.

Derek did a great job informing the membership on the current conditions in the Artic.  Below are a few of his slides. I highly recommend logging in to Club Runner to watch his entire presentation:

Andy did it again.

Next week: A member of the Public Utility Commission will speak to inform us why we pay so much for energy. We really need Larry Fargher to watch this one. His questions would be worth it.

Until next week……...call your Rotary buddies. We need 40 plus!
