A Look Back October 27th 2011
It’s only been three Months since Gerry Kosko joined our club, but he’s already making his presence felt. Gerry and other new members of Santa Clara Rotary are currently working on a new fundraising project for our club, and a report will be given to the club in early 2012. Gerry works with Archway Insurance Brokers and he is no relation to the membership warehouse giant. Immediate Past District Governor Roger Hassler led us in the pledge.
Past District Governor, Roger Hassler introduced Adriana de la Fuente, Past District Governor from Rotary District 4170, Mexico from the Partners in Rotary Service. This program was started in 2002 with the hopes of exposing Rotarians of District 5170 to the “hands on” work of Rotarians overseas. Ideally, each of our club members could travel overseas to see the effect of the Rotary Foundation; but this would be impossible. Instead the Partners in Rotary Service brings Rotarians from overseas who can tell us, in the first person, the effect of Santa Clara Rotary’s annual contribution to The Rotary Foundation (TRF). Every Rotarian Every Year; please give to TRF. President Dan introduced Ursula Smith, author of “Picking Tomatoes When the Sky Was in Flames.” Ursula gave her personal account of growing up in Germany during WWII, and what it was like growing up in an oppressive government and in fear of constant air raids and her family’s struggle to survive. Ursula signed many of her books for our club members, which also happens to be in the Library of Congress. Thank you Ursula. This week we will hear from acting Police Chief, Kevin Kyle from the Santa Clara Police Department.
