A Look Back at May 31st 2012

A dedication was made to all the graduates today!  Arie Pencovici once said, “Graduation is only a concept.  In real life every day you graduate.  Graduation is a process that goes on until the last day of your life.  If you can grasp that, you’ll make a difference.”  Rotarians do in fact grasp this concept and do make a difference on an everyday basis!
 

Easy Perez joined our club seventeen years ago and his sponsor was Lorenzo.  From 1975- 1978 he played for the San Jose State Men’s Soccer Teams.  The Spartans posted winning records in each of the four seasons he played and in 1978 set a record for most victories with 19.  He led the nation in scoring in 1975 & 1976.  For his career he scored 75 goals and was credited with 173 total points.  Easy was an Honorable Mention All-American in 1976.   Easy spent his professional career as a San Jose Earthquake.  In 2001 he was inducted into the San Jose State University Hall of Fame!  He is an attorney and practices Employment and Civil Litigation and is the principal in the Law Offices of Ismael Perez.  Easy shared some inspiring words about our veterans and Memorial Day and Mike Sellars led us in the pledge.

 

Andy made an announcement regarding Roy Strohm who suffered a debilitating stroke.  As many of you know Roy was awarded the Cliff Dochterman Award for exemplary service in scouting.  A card was sent around the room and will be sent to Roy.

 

Andy gave the club an updated on the advertising and we continue to encourage all to participate. 

The Silicon Valley BBQ Championships are June 29 & 30 and the BBQ Committee needs your help with both dates.  See Joe Sweeney for more details.

 

Through the generosity of Joe and Brendan at Lexus of Stevens Creek two tickets to the US Open at the Olympic Club in San Francisco were donated to our club.  Included with the tickets were a parking pass and admission to the Lexus Tent, located on the 17th green and where lifestyles of the rich and famous will be lavished in luxury and enjoy complementary and bottomless cocktails and food from around the world.

 

Ted and Bill C were the highest bidders of the auction and the Santa Clara Rotary Foundation is $500 wealthier because of their generosity.  Thank you Bill and Ted and of course Lexus of Stevens Creek!  We look forward to hearing about your experience at the US Open!

 

Tony wanted to make a quick announcement that Larry treated him and Bob Buchser to dinner last week and because of Larry’s generosity he wanted to donate $100 along with Bob and Larry to the club.  That was an easy $300 but don’t think Larry will be treating you to dinner again!

 

Michael Pierce was recognized for four years in Rotary on May 29.  Miles and Linda celebrated 28 years of marriage together on May 25!  Congratulations to the lovebirds.

 

In the Joker’s Wild, Miles’s guest was chosen to draw but came up a loser and the pot has swelled to $1,803 and growing!

We heard from Charlie Sobeck, Deputy Project Manager of the Kepler Project and he gave us a fascinating talk, which captured the imagination of all in attendance.  Thank you John Elwood for hosting.
