Our meeting took place in the “House Dr. Laurel Jones Built” better known as Mission College and was dedicated to all the devoted & dedicated educators not just in our club but also across the country.

To our Rotarians, Forest Witcraft said, “A hundred years from now, it will not matter what kind of car I drove, what kind of house I lived in, how much money I had in the bank…but the world may be a better place because I made a difference in the life of a child.”

To all our students, President John F. Kennedy once said, “Let us think of education as the means of developing our greatest abilities, because in each of us there is a private hope and dream which, fulfilled, can be translated into benefit for everyone and greater strength of the nation.”

To all our teachers, Robert Louis Stevenson once said, “Don’t judge each day by the harvest you reap, but the seeds you plant.”  Your commitment and devotion to teaching & education is honorable, noble and so greatly admired!  Thank you for being the difference in the lives of so many.

John Bertolotti, joined our club in 1978 and his sponsor was the late, great, Andy Cumming who we just recently loss.  John and his father Aldo were father and son Rotarians in our club for many years.  He is the President of a fictitious and imaginary club called RIM, which stands for Rotary in Moderation and he is proud to profess that he has perfect attendance in RIM.  John is a developer and is the principal owner in BearCat Properties and was welcomed as “The Godfather.”

John gave us a heart-warming description as to what comprises our club to be as special as it is.  Essentially, it is the bonds of friendship that tie so many together especially to those who have been members for years and perhaps decades.  To those who have been members for only a short time can certainly feel a strong sense to the bond that ties us all together.  John also shared some words of wisdom for all to live by.  Dr. Laurel led us in the Pledge.

Today our club was treated to the warm hospitality of Mission College.  We indulged in a great meal from the students in the Culinary Program and the venue for the meeting was professional and inviting.  Simply marvelous!

Stewart announced the Club Assembly would be held at the Doubletree from 8 a.m. till 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 31. The new board and all members are encouraged to attend.

George gave an update on Rebuilding Together on Saturday, April 28.  The Club and a host of volunteer’s will be painting the exterior of a two-story home in Santa Clara and your help is requested.

Steve R. gave the club a thorough preview of ELC next week.  This program will change the lives of the students, the volunteer’s and on March 29, this will change all of ours as well, when we hear the testimonials from the winning team!  Thank you Steve.

Miles gave us an update on the 2012 Mission City Fun Run on May 06.  The sponsors are responding positively and all he will be asking of you is a few hours of your time the day of the event.  Great work Miles, you’re a tireless Rotarian.  http://www.walkjogrun.net/events/running/Mission-City-Fun-Run-2012/2014608

John started the Bocce Sign-Up Sheet for the evening of fun & fellowship on April 05.  Contact John for more details.

It is now official; the 2012 Santa Clara Rotary Cup is on the CYSA Website and scheduled for August 18-19.  Please mark your calendars now for this “All hands on Deck” Club Project!

Mohammed and Dave announced that the Santa Clara Chamber of Commerce will be hosting a Breakfast with Jed York on April 12 and he will be discussing the Stadium Project.  We are looking to fill three tables of ten.

Speech Contest Extraordinaire, Bob was on the hot seat today.  Year after year, Bob in his baritone and demonstrative voice has repeated “There will be NO CLAPPING until all the contestants have finished their speech’s!”  Well, we are not sure if it was a momentary lapse in judgment, temporary insanity or even a senior moment, but whatever it was, Bob just had to clap for one of the students.  Since he is retired, we couldn’t keep him after school, so a $50 contribution to the Santa Clara Rotary Foundation was forthcoming, but the guilt was so overwhelming for Bob that he graciously raised it to $200.  Thank you, Bob for your generosity.

Maria Daane and Santa Clara Library Foundation were granted $1,000 from the Rotary Club of Santa Clara.   As one of our Areas of Focus being education, our club took $500 of our DDF (District Designated Funds, which come back to our club from our Rotary Foundation contributions) and matched it with another $500.  In turn we purchased books to be signed by our guest speakers and donated back to the Santa Clara Libraries!

Jan came up a winner in the Joker’s Wild and then came up empty in the pick.

A 75th Anniversary memento was presented to Haze Dennis, who is the part of the faculty that runs the Hospitality Management at Mission College and provided us with a fabulous lunch.

Dr. Laurel Jones, President of Mission College and Santa Clara Rotarian delivered a well-articulated PowerPoint presentation on the Changing Face of Mission College.  We continue to be so impressed and are very proud of the Santa Clara Rotarians who are involved in education!!!  Thank you Laurel for providing our club with your Hospitality!
