A Look Back at June 21, 2012

The great Statesman Winston Churchill said it best, and it has been repeated by our own Dave Delozier, “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give”!

Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Santa Clara can hold their heads high in knowing we make a difference everyday in the life of others in our community and around the world by what we collectively give to others!

Frank Walsh joined our club just over a year and a half ago and his sponsor was “Big Daddy” Steve Rainbolt.  Although he has been with us a short time, he has put his signature on this club for many years to come.  At the beginning of the Rotary Year he indicated he’s a “BBQ Enthusiast” and mentioned we could perhaps incorporate this in to some kind of Club Project and he is now one of three co-Chairs in the First Annual, Silicon Valley BBQ Championships!  Besides BBQ he is a motorcycle and car enthusiast and is the very proud owner of William Michael Automotive.  Thank you Frank for all you do.

We all know Frank is a little shy so he took a second take at welcoming the members and guest to the Greatest Rotary Club in the World!  Frank shared some inspiring words on Barbeque and President to be Stewart led us in the Pledge.

Mike Beck announced the first committee meeting for Steps for Success will take place on Thursday, June 28 about twenty minutes before the regular meeting at 11:40 a.m.

Stewart announced the Roast  & Toast for DG Arley at Saratoga Springs will be held on July 12 and a sign-up sheet was sent around the room.  Our own Jan Eric will be our Master of Ceremonies for the evening!

The first District Cabinet Meeting will be July 11 at the Doubletree Hotel beginning at 5:30.

Joe, Gerry and Frank gave us an update on the Silicon Valley Barbeque Championships and we are now only days away.  The club is so proud of your efforts and this weekend it’s game-on!

Our Membership Chair, Bob Ricks introduced Fire Chief Bill Kelly to the club, who gave his club bio and did a fabulous job in the process.  Interesting how his two childhood toys determined Bill’s life: an airplane and fire truck.  Bill enjoys a hobby of flying and is a very well respected Fire Chief of this great city.  The Rotary Club of Santa Clara is better because Bill is now part of it!  Welcome to Rotary!

Bob let us know we can all sleep better knowing the Jan Eric Nordmo Red Badge Legend is in tact.   Frank was presented his Blue Badge

Lorenzo brought in his good-looking staff to talk about the golf tournament his company is hosting in July.  Please see Lorenzo for more details about playing in the tournament.

On a special note, my late father, Jack A. Holder, would have been 100 on June 23.  He remains a great source of inspiration to me and will be for the rest of my life.

                          Andy introduced our guest speaker, Dr. Arlyne Diamond and Arlyne spoke on creativity in the workplace.  Arlyne is also a member of the San Jose North Rotary Club.  Thank you Arlyne and thank you Andy.
