A LOOK BACK AT December 01, 2011
The meeting began with a tribute to the
Veterans of Pearl Harbor. The
attack on Pearl Harbor on December 07, 1941 was a defining moment in American
history. When the attack was over,
2,335 servicemen and 68 civilians were killed, with 1,178 wounded. Seventy years have passed since the
“…day that will live in infamy.”
Let us never forget the rallying cry of “Remember Pearl Harbor.” Let us never forget the sacrifices
these brave men and women gave in service to their country so that we may all
live in the comfort of liberty. We
pray that we always embrace, knowing that our freedom in this country came at a
great cost! May God Bless the
Veterans of Pearl Harbor!
Past President, “Diamond” Michael Beach, who is also the President of our Club Foundation, gave us a spirited welcome to our club and John led us in the pledge of allegiance.
Thank you to George for organizing the tailgate party and game with SJSU and Navy Midshipmen. Great game and great time had by all. Stewart may wish to continue this next year. $50 was raised for our Club Foundation from this event.
Thank you also to Sandy for providing her hospitality on Royal Coach Tours for our Day at the Races at Golden Gate fields, the mimosas were a great touch. Thank you too to Stewart for providing breakfast burritos from Hay Market, they truly hit the spot. 37 people enjoyed a great day at the horse races and congratulations to Stewart for being the big winner! Is Stewart a member of the $50 Club?
Seventy people have signed up already for the Christmas Dinner on December 15, 5:30 p.m. at the Santa Clara Hilton. An alternative to Prime Rib will be available and an email will go out shortly with more detail.
Bill introduced John Verela of Pacific Corporate Solutions (E-Waste) and Roxanne Murray from Lexus of Stevens Creek. A check was provided to the Santa Clara Rotary Foundation in the name of Christmas for Kids in the amount of $643.44 from E-Waste and an additional $180 from an artist at Lexus. Thank you John for your donation and thank you Roxanne for all your hospitality towards the Rotary Club of Santa Clara.
Bob introduced our Speech Contest host, Heath, but first Bob had to remind the members of the greatest speech contest that was ever hosted in our club. That was the one when Dan was hosting and none of the contestants showed up. Thanks Bob!
Heath did a magnificent job hosting the speech contest this year and a nice touch to adding “Name That Rotarian” between speeches. We had three contestants from Wilcox High School and three contestants from Santa Clara High School. A big thanks to all those Rotarians who helped out this year and especially to the Toast Masters who come out every year and judge the contestants. Katie Ratermann (daughter of Andy and Caren) was a winner for the second time! Great job Katie, we will see you again at the Area Speech Contest in March!
The Jokers Wild will return in 2012.
