A Look Back at April 26, 2012

The month of April is considered Magazine Month in Rotary and Rotarians are encourage to not only read the magazine, but also are encouraged to share the magazine with family and friends to help promote the great works of Rotary.  Unfortunately, for the some, the Rotarian magazine rarely leaves the bathroom at home.

The Rotary Club of Denver annually award the Branch Rickey Award, which celebrates a players off-the-diamond humanitarian accomplishments.  The award is named for the baseball executive and player who made history in 1945 by signing Jackie Robinson to the Brooklyn Dodgers, breaking baseballs color barrier.

 

 

Each year one player is nominate by each Major League Team and a vote is then conducted by the national selection committee, which consists of members of the sports media, previous winners of the award and Rotary District Governors in major-league cities.

A statue of Branch Rickey placed by the Rotary Club of Denver reads, “The Player-It is not the honor that you take with you but the heritage you leave behind.”

Incidentally, Richard Haley, (President Dan’s - Maternal Grandmothers Brother or Great Uncle) was a member of the Rotary Club of Denver some eighty years ago!

Shawn Hartung is serving her second term as a Club Director and her original classification was that of Commercial Banker of which she has an illustrious career in.  Recently she embarked on a new business and currently is the President of Silicon Valley Tours.  Shawn has served on the faculty of the Political Science Department at San Jose State and is a graduate from the Santa Clara University School of Law.

Shawn gave us an inspiring Invocation and Fun Run Committee Chair, Miles Barber led us in the pledge.

Lidia was recognized for providing the club a “photographer” for our previous meeting in her absence.  Thank you for your commitment Lidia! 

Steve announced that Lidia will be recognized at the Pyramid Awards for Individual Business of the Year and was recognized by being admitted to our $50 Club.

Andy announced that the Advertising Campaign will kick-off at the May 10 Meeting at the Hilton.

Miles and the Fun Run Committee have about completed preparations for our May 06 Fun Run at Great America.  Whether you have signed up or not come on out Sunday Morning and help cheer our runners on.

Membership Chair Bob was recognized for 16 years of service to our club.  Satish was recognized for 3 years of service.  Joe was recognized for his first year of service, but what a year it has been!  Joe has involved himself with about every committee and project this year!

George was recognized for his birthday on April 20 and next year he will reach another milestone.  Retired Judge Rod celebrated a birthday on Aprill 22 as well.

John M., and his bride Kristen celebrated seven years of marriage together on April 16.  Andy and Caren celebrated 23 years together on April 22.  Kenny and Dana celebrated their 18th honeymoon on April 23!

Mother-to-be Kelly’s number was picked in the Joker’s Wild but came up a loser in the draw.  The pot is now worth well over $1,300.

Nick introduced Santa Clara University Baseball Head Coach, Dan O’Brien.  Coach O’Brien embraces a culture of teamwork and creates an environment where all the players want to be part of it.  Great things are coming for the Bronco Baseball Program.  Thank you Coach and thank you Nick for hosting today!

Thursday, we will be meeting at BearCat Properties for the JB Vintage Car presentation.

We will be back at the Hilton on May 10.
