A Look Back at April 19, 2012
Sidney Sheldon once said, “My heroes are those who risk their lives every day to protect our world and make it a better place – police, firefighters and members of our armed forces.” Today is dedicated to our men and women in uniform everywhere.
These men and women deserve our utmost respect and admiration and may God Bless and protect each and every one of them!
Dave Delozier joined our club at the tender age of 21 and his sponsor was Hal Brinkley from PG&E. Dave served our club as a “kinder and gentler” president and for the past 12 years has co-chaired our Chinese Chicken Salad Booth and the Art & Wine Festival.
In addition, he has served the City of Santa Clara as a Council Member, Parks and Recreation Commissioner, Past Chair and Board Member of the Chamber, and the Charter Review Committee. In 2011, Dave was awarded the Austen Warburton Award for community service.
Dave, is the third generation and proud owner of one of the oldest businesses in Santa Clara; Petersons Insurance Company, which was founded in 1929.
Dave gave a heartfelt welcome to the club and followed up with just as warm an invocation. Maria led the club in the pledge.
Miles announced we now have 500 members signed up for the Fun Run on May 6th!
Gerry gave us a PowerPoint update on the Silicon Valley BBQ Championships, which are only ten weeks away on June 29 and 30. Please see Gerry, Frank or Joe for more information.
The U.S. Small Business Administration and Department of Education hosted a forum on entrepreneurship at the White House two weeks ago bringing together business owners, experts and leaders from a various Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) to discuss opportunities and facilitate solutions to challenges in underserved communities. On the panel was our own Dr. Laurel Jones of Mission College. While in DC, Laurel was eyewitness to the final flight of the Space Shuttle Discovery flying over Washington to its final hangar in the Smithsonian. Congratulation’s Laurel and welcome to the $50 Club.
John B. announced that our May 03, Lunch Meeting will take place at his Auto Museum at: 505 Laurelwood Road in Santa Clara. Bearcat Properties will be the name on the sign.
Congratulations to Mohammed, Laurel and Mike S., for celebrating one year in Santa Clara Rotary on March 31. Congratulations are in order to the following; Margaret, April 06, (6 years), Bob R., April 18, (16 years), Easy, April 13 (17 years).
Miles celebrated 32 years, Dave celebrated 35 years and Marty Blair celebrated 56 years of service to Santa Clara Rotary. Congratulations and thank you for your service to your community and our world!

Congratulations for Wedding Anniversaries to Lorenzo and Norma Elena (33 years on March 31), Easy and Cathy (17 years on March 26), Jak & Betty (57 years on April 01), John B & Joan (36 years on April 03, which incidentally is Father Aldo’s birthday), Jim and Chery (46 years on April 10), Joe & Linda (32 years on April 12), and one of our newest members, John M & Kristen (7 years on April 16). Very special congratulations, to Dick and Connie Brooding is celebrating 62 years of matrimony on April 15!
Andy was the winner of the drawing but came up without the Joker and the pot surges to nearly $1,200!
Today we heard from Holly Gillingham, who gave us some insight to how the Parole Board is made up in California and discussed the process and procedures of a Parole Hearings as well. Another great program and thank you Holly for taking the time to speak with our club.
This week we are going to hear from Dan O’Brien Head Baseball Coach for Santa Clara University and Nick Livak will be our host.
Lorenzo, have a wonderful time at the Rotary International Convention in Bangkok Thailand. We look forward to hearing about the details (all of them) upon your return!
