Music and Poetry
Mar. 09, 2017
Tim has been dabbling in poetry most of his post pubescent life, but has now taken to writing with fervor as a means of release, education, and examination of his internal demons. His poetry has been called "provocative", which he interprets as a commentary on his use of no holds barred language as well as his desire to touch the souls of others by baring his own. Most recently he has been experimenting with the combining of his love of music and spoken word, finding ways to combine and intertwine the two art forms. For the past four years Tim has been able to express his love of performance art by hosting the monthly open mic at The Canterbury Theatre every First Friday at 8:00PM as well as the annual open mic held at The Lubeznik Center for the Arts typically in January. He feels honored and privileged to be able to support and promote the amazing talent in the area. He also views this as a means of supporting the effort to make Michigan City a destination for those seeking art and cultural experiences.

Salvation Army Mission Trip
Apr. 27, 2017
Lt. Kerry Bartsch has been an officer with The Salvation Army since 2012, but her involvement with the organization began when she was a child. At the age of five, Kerry began attending vacation bible school and summer camp at The Salvation Army because it was a place she always felt loved and accepted. Following her passion for social work and helping others through Christ, Kerry found a career with The Salvation Army. She graduated from Southeastern University in 2005 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Human Services and later attended The Salvation Army’s College for Officer Training with Johnny Bartsch, her husband since 2002. The couple has three children – Gracie, Selah and Chloe – and a new Rottweiler puppy named Faith. In her free time, Kerry loves kayaking, running and spending time with her family. The Bartschs came to Michigan City last year to oversee the local Salvation Army Corps, coming from their most recent assignment in Wichita, Kansas. In January, Johnny and Kerry visited a Salvation Army school in Tanzania. The two-week mission trip focused on repairing and remodeling the Matumaini Salvation Army School for Children with Disabilities. |

Lubeznik Art Center
Jun. 29, 2017
Lubeznik Center for the Arts (LCA) announces that Hannah Hammond-Hagman replaces Janet Bloch, as the Director of Education at LCA. Bloch was tasked with finding a uniquely qualified candidate to fill her place when she was promoted to the Interim Executive Director position in September 2016 and named as Executive Director in December 2016. Executive Director Janet Bloch states, "after seven years serving as education director, you can imagine that I was very selective about who would take my place. I can't imagine trusting anyone to do this job more than I trust Hannah. She is experienced, passionate and skilled. She was the only choice for me!" Hannah Hammond-Hagman is an artist residing in Valparaiso after years on the East and West coasts. In her work over the past twenty years in arts education and arts and cultural non-profits, she has had the privilege to work with students from kindergarten to college age in the classroom and out in the community. She remains committed to producing and designing creative curriculum and events that promote creative economic development and placemaking from the neighborhood level to the state level. She believes in the power of the arts to transform lives and communities, and nourishes this in her pedagogical practice, her studio practice, and her personal life. Hannah earned her Masters of Fine Arts from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a BFA from Indiana University, Bloomington. "I'm thrilled to become a part of the amazing work LCA does," states Hammond-Hagman, "and I am deeply committed to continuing to build upon our foundation of creative community outreach and educational programming. My prior experience as a teaching artist with LCA taught me first-hand the level of excellence and breadth of programming provided, and I am dedicated to upholding and expanding the work we do with our various community partners in our school programs, community events, and our classes and workshops. I am specifically invested in broadening our programming for families and teens with new interpretive programs and initiatives. I feel very welcome, and I am so grateful for this opportunity to do the work I love." The LCA has provided arts experiences for the public, enhancing education, economic development, and quality of life throughout the region for more than 35 years. Adjacent to Michigan City's lakefront, the LCA welcomes members and guests to experience art through an eclectic mix of exhibitions, classes, cultural performances, and memorable after-hours events. In addition to a full schedule of contemporary art exhibitions, the LCA is home to permanent and outdoor art collections along with a Gallery Shop featuring hand-crafted artisan items. The Return of Manhood
Jul. 20, 2017
Campbell has been with the Michigan City Police Department for 18 years and has worked as school resource officer at Michigan City High School for the last seven. He also founded Worldgate Centre for Life, and the team there, among other contributions, helped to develop the MCPD Youth leadership Academy. "Those people that impacted my life left an impression on me, and it's my duty to impact others," he said. Although he grew up poor and his father went to prison, Campbell overcame. He graduated from Indiana State University in 1988 and from the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy in 1997 while being president of his class. He said he should be a statistic of what happens to children from such backgrounds. "Realistically, I shouldn't be where I'm at," he said. He now focuses on helping others in three main ways. His vision is to empower leaders, engage youth and impact marriages, he said. Society centers on the family, he believes. Most of his work right now starts with working with young people. He interacts with youth at MCHS, and he also participates in youth leadership seminars. At MCHS, the students gave him the nickname "Dad," and he said he feels good knowing that young people believe he models what a father does. "It really just speaks to the need for men in our society to be in place," he said. Campbell's love for God provides his greatest motivation, and all his work is built on his faith. The principles in the Bible will build a robust life, he said, so he wants to impart those principles to others. He also said nothing he does would be possible without his wife, LaRonda Campbell, who also has been a great leader. |

Keys to Hope
Jul. 27, 2017
Michael Kilbourne CCH welcomes Mike Kilbourne as Keys to Hope director. After a three month search, Citizens Concerned for the Homeless is proud to announce the appointment of Mike Kilbourne as Director of the Keys to Hope Community Resource Center. In January 2016, Mike began coordinating the Street Outreach Program for Keys to Hope, working alongside Ed Seal of the Swanson Center, engaging social service agencies, businesses, pastors, community leaders and those in poverty. Mike believes that partnerships are the best way to help the marginalized of any community. Mike grew up homeless, with parents who suffered from addiction and mental illness. There were times when Mike’s parents could not even afford shoes for him. “I remember the pain of poverty like only yesterday and to be truthful, I never expected to have the wonderful life and community I have today. My experience gave me a drive and passion to serve others. Keys to Hope has some fantastic community partnerships we work with under a model we refer to as Coordinated Access. This community is extremely generous and I am very blessed to be a part of the team!” |
