A new F.A.C.E. at FWCS
Fort Wayne Community Schools has created a centralized location for critical support services for its students and families. Called the Family and Community Engagement Center, the building opened two years ago and houses services that are a gateway to better learning.

Faye Williams-Robbins, the center’s chief officer, reported that the district’s educational and community services programs meet about 90 percent of students’ needs. For the remaining 10 percent who require additional services – anything from more rigorous academics to health care options – the F.A.C.E. Center is the place to visit.

Many services are housed at the center, which is located on East Douglas Street in downtown Fort Wayne, near the Grile Administrative Center and the Anthis Career Center. Services include:
  • New student enrollment – including online registration
  • Health and wellness clinic – with three full-time nurses plus a nurse practitioner
  • College and career readiness – such as seminars and FAFSA (college financial aid) application assistance
  • Personalized programs – mental health, alternative school and Career Center oversight
  • Families in Transition – homelessness assistance, clothing bank, temporary housing assistance
  • Community Programs – Study Connection, school volunteer screening/applications
  • K-12 athletic support – coach support and alignment
  • Vocal and instrumental music support – b Instrumental, Kids Rock, summer instrumental camps
  • Professional learning – seminars for educators

“We have to take the time to know each student so we can help each one,” Williams-Robbins said. “We have students whose needs are not being met. When you’re worried about where you’re going to sleep at night or when you’re going to get something to eat, you can’t focus on school.”

Williams-Robbins said the center is a community collaboration supported by local foundations, businesses and organizations. With 29,000 students in FWCS, a centralized district support center is a much needed and used resource for students, their families, their teachers and our community.
